Keith Lee Discussed For Potential AEW Return As His Nearly Two-And-A-Half-Year Absence Continues

Keith Lee has not competed inside an All Elite Wrestling ring in nearly two and a half years, but the door has not completely closed on a potential return for the former AEW World Tag Team Champion.

According to a new report from Fightful Select, AEW sources confirmed that Lee was discussed internally for a return to programming several months ago. Those conversations have not led to anything concrete. There were reportedly tentative plans at one point, but Fightful noted that they likely would have already happened if everything had progressed as originally intended. It is also unclear whether those discussions ever reached Lee himself.

Fightful could not confirm Lee’s current physical status. The outlet also has not heard that he has recently been backstage to begin the multi-week medical-clearance process that typically takes place ahead of an in-ring return. However, the interest surrounding his absence has not faded. After Fightful teased its update, several wrestlers reportedly reached out to ask what was going on with Lee. He remains under contract with AEW.

That alone makes this more than a routine injury update. Keith Lee has quietly become one of the biggest unanswered questions in AEW.

Lee arrived in the company with enormous expectations following his WWE departure. He made his surprise AEW debut on the February 9th, 2022 episode of Dynamite, immediately overpowering Isiah Kassidy to qualify for the Face of the Revolution Ladder Match at Revolution. It was a simple introduction that worked because Lee did not need an elaborate explanation. His combination of size, explosiveness and athleticism had already made him one of the most fascinating heavyweights of his generation.

His most significant AEW run came alongside Swerve Strickland. The unlikely pairing developed into Swerve In Our Glory and eventually captured the AEW World Tag Team Championship on July 13th, 2022, defeating The Young Bucks and Team Taz’s Ricky Starks and Powerhouse Hobbs in a three-way match at Dynamite: Fyter Fest. Lee and Strickland held the titles for 70 days and successfully defended them three times before losing the championship to The Acclaimed at Dynamite: Grand Slam.

The partnership eventually collapsed, but AEW never fully delivered the singles rivalry that should have followed. Lee later aligned with Dustin Rhodes as Naturally Limitless, competed sporadically across AEW and Ring of Honor programming, and unsuccessfully challenged Samoa Joe for the ROH World Television Championship in November 2023. He then defeated Shane Taylor at ROH Final Battle before making it clear that his unfinished business was still with Strickland.

Lee’s final match took place on the December 23rd, 2023 Holiday Bash edition of AEW Collision, where he defeated Brian Cage with the Big Bang Catastrophe. The victory was supposed to lead directly into his long-awaited match against Strickland at AEW Worlds End one week later. Instead, the match never happened. AEW President Tony Khan announced on X that the company’s doctors could not clear Lee to compete, forcing Dustin Rhodes to replace him against Strickland.

That canceled match has become even more frustrating with time. Swerve Strickland went on to rise into AEW’s main-event picture, while Lee disappeared from television without a proper conclusion to their story. What should have been a meaningful grudge match between former champions instead became the last reminder of how much unresolved potential remains.

The latest report offers a small amount of hope, but it is not confirmation that a comeback is imminent. AEW discussing Keith Lee internally is notable. It shows that his name has not been forgotten and that a return has at least been considered. However, until he is cleared, appears backstage regularly and is placed into an actual storyline, it would be irresponsible to treat tentative discussions as anything more than tentative discussions.

At this stage, the priority should be Lee’s health and his ability to return on his own terms. If he is physically able to wrestle again, AEW still has an opportunity to reintroduce him as a major attraction rather than another name lost inside an overcrowded roster. The audience has spent nearly two and a half years waiting for a real answer. For now, the only certainty is that Keith Lee remains under contract, his return has been discussed and his unfinished business in AEW remains impossible to ignore.
