Steven Borden was injured at AEW All Out Saturday night, bringing the biggest AEW match of his young career to a frightening and premature end.
Borden teamed with TNT Champion Darby Allin against Kyle Fletcher and Kevin Knight, with the winners earning a future opportunity at the AEW World Tag Team Championship. What started as another major step forward for Borden quickly became secondary after a scary landing forced the match to be stopped.
Steven Borden’s AEW All Out Match Comes to an Abrupt End
The injury occurred when Borden and Knight climbed opposite turnbuckles and attempted to meet in the air.
The two collided in midair before Borden came down awkwardly. It immediately became apparent that something was wrong.
Officials checked on Borden and the match was stopped rather than attempting to continue around him. Fletcher and Knight were declared the winners, earning the future AEW World Tag Team Championship opportunity.
Borden was removed from ringside on a stretcher.
It was an unsettling ending to Borden’s AEW pay-per-view in-ring debut and a match that represented another significant step forward for someone AEW has spent the last several weeks introducing to its television audience.
AEW Provides an Encouraging Steven Borden Update
Later during All Out, AEW provided an update on Borden’s condition.
Tony Schiavone announced that Borden had arrived at the hospital and was conscious and responsive. He was awaiting further medical evaluation.
That is encouraging news after how concerning the initial scene looked, but there is an important distinction to make.
AEW has not announced a specific diagnosis for Borden. There has also been no official timetable given for when he could return to the ring. Until additional information is provided, anything more specific about the severity of the injury would be speculation.
For now, the most important information is that Borden was conscious and responsive following the incident.
A Frightening Reminder About Risk
There will inevitably be questions about the spot itself.
Borden is still in the beginning stages of his professional wrestling career, and AEW has made that journey part of his presentation. He is not supposed to simply become another version of Sting. The entire point of this run has been watching Steven Borden gradually establish his own identity while working alongside Darby Allin.
That makes what happened at All Out particularly difficult to watch.
This was an ambitious aerial spot with an obvious degree of risk. Wrestling carries unavoidable danger regardless of experience, and one accident does not automatically mean somebody was reckless or at fault. There is currently no reason to assign blame to Borden, Knight or anyone else involved.
Still, what happened is another reminder that the margin between a spectacular wrestling moment and something going badly wrong can disappear in seconds.
That is especially difficult to ignore with Borden still so early in his career.
His connection with the audience was already developing. His partnership with Allin had already moved into the AEW World Tag Team Championship picture. This was supposed to be another step in that progression.
Instead, everything stopped.
To AEW’s credit, once the injury happened, there was no attempt to force the match toward a conventional finish. The contest was stopped and Borden received immediate medical attention. That was exactly what the situation required.
Steven Borden’s Health Comes Before Whatever Was Next
Fletcher and Knight officially leave All Out with a future AEW World Tag Team Championship opportunity, but that result understandably became an afterthought.
Borden entered All Out with momentum and another opportunity to show that his wrestling career could become something more than an extension of his father’s legacy.
Instead, his AEW pay-per-view in-ring debut ended with medical personnel attending to him and the match being stopped.
The encouraging news is that AEW confirmed Borden was conscious and responsive after arriving at the hospital, where he was awaiting further evaluation.
Now the wrestling part can wait.
Whatever AEW had planned next for Steven Borden and Darby Allin will still be there when—and only when—Borden is healthy enough to continue.
