AEW is turning an unfortunate situation into a major opportunity for its women’s division.
During tonight’s episode of AEW Collision, the company announced that a new TBS Champion will be crowned in the first-ever Survival of the Fittest match in AEW history. The announcement comes after Willow Nightingale was forced to relinquish the championship due to a shoulder injury, bringing an abrupt and disappointing end to one of the strongest runs of her career.
Instead of filling the vacancy with a standard singles match or a traditional multi-woman bout, AEW is borrowing one of Ring of Honor’s most recognizable concepts and bringing it to the company’s main television product for the first time.
AEW Brings Survival of the Fittest to the TBS Championship Picture
For anyone unfamiliar with the stipulation, Survival of the Fittest is built around endurance.
The traditional format begins with qualifying matches. The winners advance to a final elimination match, where competitors are removed one by one through pinfall or submission until only one wrestler remains. The final survivor leaves with the prize.
Throughout Ring of Honor’s history, Survival of the Fittest has primarily been used to elevate wrestlers into championship contention. It has also been used more recently to crown or determine champions. Now, AEW is applying that same concept to the TBS Championship and giving the women’s division a high-stakes match with a built-in sense of urgency.
The decision makes sense. Willow did not lose the championship inside the ring, so AEW needed a match that felt significant enough to properly establish her successor. A Survival of the Fittest match creates that opportunity while giving several women a chance to make an impression in a championship setting.
Willow Nightingale Forced to Relinquish the TBS Championship
The title became vacant after Willow announced that she had suffered a shoulder injury during her successful championship defense against Red Velvet on the May 16 episode of AEW Collision.
Willow fought through the pain and retained the championship, but the injury ultimately proved serious enough to take her out of action. During the May 20 episode of AEW Dynamite, she confirmed that she was not medically cleared to compete and would be stepping away from the ring.
The injury also forced Willow to withdraw from the Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament. She had originally been scheduled to face Alex Windsor in the opening round before being removed from the bracket.
It was a frustrating ending to a meaningful championship reign. Willow captured the TBS Championship by defeating Mercedes Moné in December and went on to successfully defend the title 10 times. She brought energy, credibility, and consistency to the championship while continuing to establish herself as one of the most naturally likable wrestlers on the AEW roster.
Her reign deserved a proper conclusion inside the ring. Unfortunately, injuries do not always allow for that.
A Major Opportunity for AEW’s Women’s Division
AEW now has a chance to use Willow’s absence to create something meaningful rather than simply rushing into the next title reign.
The TBS Championship has been one of the most important platforms for the women’s division since its introduction. It has helped elevate wrestlers, create consistent television opportunities, and give the division another championship with real value. The next champion needs to feel like more than a temporary replacement.
A Survival of the Fittest match gives AEW the right kind of stage to accomplish that.
The match should allow several wrestlers to enter the conversation, create multiple possible directions, and give the eventual winner a memorable moment. It also opens the door for AEW to introduce fresh matchups and develop new rivalries around the championship instead of treating the vacancy like a minor inconvenience.
Willow Nightingale’s injury is disappointing, especially after the momentum she built during her latest run as TBS Champion. However, AEW has responded with an intriguing idea that could give the women’s division a strong television attraction and crown a champion who truly earns the opportunity.
Now, the question is simple: who will survive?

I’m the quiet one until the bell rings then I’ve got takes. I live for WWE NXT and TNA, I want every promotion to succeed, and I will absolutely roast the bad decisions on sight (because someone has to). Anime taught me to respect long-term storytelling; wrestling taught me that sometimes the plan is “we panicked” and called it “unpredictable.” The Miz got me into all of this, so yeah I appreciate confidence, commitment, and the art of talking like you’re already the main event. Now I bring that same energy to the page as the main writer for Late Night Crew Wrestling because if you’re not here to be must-see and tell the truth, why are you here?!
