EVOLVE Wrestling was founded in 2010 by Gabe Sapolsky (former Ring of Honor booker), Sal Hamaoui, and Davey Richards. The promotion quickly became one of the premier independent wrestling companies in the United States, noted for its technical wrestling style, “freestyle” match formats, and partnerships with international promotions like Dragon Gate USA. From the beginning, EVOLVE emphasized in-ring quality and the elevation of young talent, carving out a unique identity among independent promotions.
In September 2012, EVOLVE crowned its first-ever champion, A.R. Fox, establishing the Evolve Championship as the company’s top prize. During the mid-2010s, the Open the Freedom Gate Championship from Dragon Gate USA/WWNLive was merged with the Evolve title, solidifying the championship’s prestige. Among the standout performers of this era was Timothy Thatcher, who became a cornerstone of the company and its longest-reigning champion, holding the Evolve Championship for 596 days until Zack Sabre Jr. ended his reign at Evolve 79 on February 25, 2017.
Other major names who shaped EVOLVE’s identity during this time included Matt Riddle, AR Fox, Drew Gulak, Swerve Strickland (then Shane Strickland), Joey Janela, Keith Lee, and Tracy Williams.
The promotion’s growing reputation caught WWE’s attention. In 2015, WWE and EVOLVE entered into a working agreement that gave WWE “first-look” access to EVOLVE’s roster. This partnership was significant, as WWE officials like Triple H and William Regal would attend EVOLVE events to scout talent. EVOLVE became a key feeder system for WWE, with wrestlers like The Street Profits (Montez Ford & Angelo Dawkins), Austin Theory, and Drew Gulak making appearances in EVOLVE before transitioning to WWE. This partnership also allowed EVOLVE to host qualifying matches for WWE’s Cruiserweight Classic in 2016, giving the promotion additional exposure.
From 2016 to 2019, EVOLVE solidified its reputation as one of the best places for up-and-coming talent to sharpen their skills. During this time, Swerve Strickland defeated Matt Riddle for the Evolve Championship at Evolve 108 in 2018, and Keith Lee made his mark by holding the WWN Championship while appearing on EVOLVE shows. Alumni like Strickland, Lee, Thatcher, and Theory would go on to WWE or AEW, while others such as Curt Stallion, Josh Briggs, Anthony Greene, and Leon Ruff also transitioned to WWE’s developmental system. Some, like Strickland and Keith Lee, eventually became top stars in AEW.
After years of working together, WWE acquired EVOLVE outright in 2020. This purchase marked the end of the promotion’s independent run and began the process of integrating EVOLVE’s legacy into WWE’s developmental structure. In the years that followed, WWE began to evaluate how the brand could be repurposed as part of its talent pipeline.
In January 2025, WWE trademarked the EVOLVE name and confirmed plans for a brand relaunch. On February 1, 2025, at the Royal Rumble, WWE officially announced the rebranded WWE Evolve brand, set to premiere on Tubi in the United States and on YouTube internationally. The first tapings took place on February 7, 2025, at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, replacing NXT Level Up, which had been canceled in December 2024. The new WWE Evolve was designed to be WWE’s third-tier developmental platform, focusing on college athletes, recruits from the WWE Performance Center, independent prospects, and selected NXT performers.
With the relaunch came new championships. On June 4, 2025, Jackson Drake became the inaugural WWE Evolve Champion by defeating Keanu Carver, Sean Legacy, and Edris Enofé in a Fatal Four-Way match. As of late July 2025, he remains champion.
The WWE Evolve Women’s Championship was first won by Kali Armstrong in May 2025, emerging victorious in a Fatal Four-Way match against Kylie Rae, Kendal Grey, and Wendy Choo.
The current WWE Evolve roster features names such as Edris Enofé, Sean Legacy, Keanu Carver, Brooks Jensen, Bryce Donovan, Chantel Monroe, Carlee Bright, Brad Baylor, Jack Cartwheel, Drako Knox, and Harlem Lewis. Much like its independent predecessor, the brand emphasizes competitive matches, multi-competitor bouts, and tournament formats designed to elevate new stars.
Throughout its history, EVOLVE has been defined by landmark matches and star-making performances. Thatcher’s historic reign and his match with Zack Sabre Jr. at Evolve 79, Strickland’s title victory over Matt Riddle at Evolve 108, and Keith Lee’s championship successes all helped cement EVOLVE’s place as a launchpad for wrestling’s next generation. Now under WWE’s banner, WWE Evolve continues that tradition by offering rising talent a platform to develop and prepare for NXT and the main roster.
EVOLVE’s journey from a respected independent promotion founded in 2010 to a fully integrated WWE developmental brand in 2025 demonstrates its lasting impact on professional wrestling. Alumni like Austin Theory, Swerve Strickland, Keith Lee, and Timothy Thatcher exemplify the brand’s legacy. Today, WWE Evolve, streaming weekly on Tubi in the U.S. and YouTube internationally, carries forward the spirit of the original EVOLVE while serving as an essential incubator for the future of WWE.
