“That’s What’s Up”: Celebrating the Unforgettable Journey of Ron Killings (R-Truth)

In a heartfelt announcement on June 1, 2025, Ron Killings—known to WWE fans worldwide as R-Truth—revealed his release from WWE, marking the end of a remarkable 17-year tenure with the company. Killings expressed his gratitude on social media

Before his WWE fame, Killings made history in 2002 by becoming the first African American to win the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship during his tenure with TNA Wrestling. His victory over Ken Shamrock not only showcased his in-ring prowess but also broke significant racial barriers in professional wrestling.

R-Truth’s unique blend of humor and athleticism made him a fan favorite. From mistaking the Royal Rumble for a ladder match and bringing a ladder into the ring, to his hilarious “Truth TV” segments, Killings consistently delivered laughter and entertainment. His comedic timing and charisma turned the 24/7 Championship into a must-watch segment, earning him a record 53 reigns with the title.

Throughout his career, R-Truth engaged in notable feuds and matches, including a WWE Championship main event against John Cena at the 2011 Capitol Punishment pay-per-view.

His versatility allowed him to seamlessly transition between comedic roles and serious competition, showcasing his depth as a performer. In a full-circle moment, Truth recently stepped into the ring once again with his childhood hero, Undisputed WWE Champion John Cena, in a non-title match at the most recent Saturday Night’s Main Event show. The emotional showdown served as a fitting tribute to his journey—reminding fans that beyond the laughs was a competitor who always rose to the moment, no matter the opponent.

Truth’s in-ring résumé is far more than just comic relief. He captured his first United States Championship in 2010, defeating The Miz and cementing himself as a legitimate singles contender.

Later that year, he and The Miz headlined Survivor Series 2011 in a blockbuster tag team main event against none other than John Cena and The Rock inside Madison Square Garden—a historic night where Truth stood shoulder-to-shoulder with three of the industry’s biggest icons. In 2024, he surprised many with a unique run in The Judgment Day, adding his signature unpredictability to the group’s dark presence.

That same year, he reunited with The Miz to reform Awesome Truth, and the duo pulled off a massive WrestleMania moment by capturing the Raw Tag Team Championships in a Six-Pack Ladder Match at WrestleMania 40, effectively un-unifying the tag titles in front of a roaring crowd. It was a full-circle moment for the duo and a testament to Truth’s staying power and legacy.

Fittingly, his final WWE match came this past Friday on SmackDown, where he faced off against WWE’s newest signee, JC Mateo—formerly known on the independent scene as Jeff Cobb. While the bout was brief and leaned more toward a squash match in favor of the dominant newcomer, Truth’s appearance still drew a heartfelt reaction from the crowd. Even in defeat, he reminded fans of his unshakable charisma, selflessness, and willingness to help elevate others on his way out—hallmarks of a true professional.

The wrestling community reacted to Killings’ departure with an outpouring of support. WWE Superstar Rhea Ripley described the news as “heartbreaking,” reflecting the sentiments of many within the industry.

Ron Killings’ journey from trailblazing champion to beloved entertainer has left an indelible mark on professional wrestling. His ability to connect with audiences through humor, athleticism, and authenticity ensures that his legacy will endure for years to come.

As fans and peers reflect on his contributions, one thing is certain: R-Truth’s impact on the world of wrestling is immeasurable, and his presence will be deeply missed.
