WWE has officially reshaped its developmental landscape with the launch of the WWE ID (Independent Development) program, a groundbreaking initiative designed to scout, train, and elevate talent directly from the independent wrestling scene. Introduced in October 2024, WWE ID aims to provide unsigned wrestlers with elite-level exposure, infrastructure, and opportunities without requiring a formal WWE contract, while simultaneously giving WWE access to a broader and more diverse pool of future stars. This initiative connects the independent wrestling world directly to WWE’s evolving developmental ecosystem, including the newly relaunched WWE EVOLVE brand.
The WWE ID program partners with some of the most respected training academies and independent promotions across North America, including Reality of Wrestling (TX), Black and Brave Academy (IA), Nightmare Factory (GA), Elite Pro Wrestling Training Center (NH), and KnokX Pro Academy (CA). These schools serve as core training grounds for ID prospects, who are mentored by WWE’s Performance Center staff while continuing to compete across the independent circuit.
Major independent promotions such as Game Changer Wrestling (GCW) and Future Stars of Wrestling (FSW) also host ID matches and tournaments, allowing signed and unsigned talent to appear on WWE-affiliated events while maintaining their indie presence. Wrestlers receive exposure on WWE’s official digital platforms, and standout performers can appear on EVOLVE without committing to a full WWE contract.
WWE EVOLVE was relaunched in March 2025 as a weekly program streaming on Tubi in the U.S. and YouTube internationally. Filmed at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, EVOLVE blends the best of WWE ID prospects, Performance Center recruits, and breakout indie stars as a bridge to NXT and the main roster. Jackson Drake became the inaugural WWE EVOLVE Champion on June 4, 2025 (taped April 25) by defeating Keanu Carver, Edris Enofé, and Sean Legacy in a four‑way elimination, pinning Legacy last. Kali Armstrong was crowned the first EVOLVE Women’s Champion on May 28 (taped April 25), last eliminating Kylie Rae in another four‑way fatal match featuring Kendal Grey and Wendy Choo .
On February 18, 2025, Triple H unveiled two new titles exclusive to the ID program—a men’s and a women’s WWE ID Championship—designed to be defended only across partner independent promotions. Winners who were not already under WWE ID contract would automatically receive one, providing a direct route into WWE’s developmental system while maintaining indie credentials .
The inaugural tournaments began during WrestleMania 41 week in April across GCW and FSW shows, featuring top prospects like Sean Legacy, Zayda Steel, Ice Williams, Cappuccino Jones, Jack Cartwheel, Zara Zakher, Brad Baylor, and Ricky Smokes .
On August 1, 2025, at GCW’s ID Showcase event in Rutherford, New Jersey, the first-ever WWE ID Champions were crowned. In the women’s division, Kylie Rae emerged victorious in a triple-threat final against Zayda Steel and Zara Zakher by submitting Steel with a crossface, becoming the inaugural WWE ID Women’s Champion . In the men’s division, Cappuccino Jones defeated Jack Cartwheel in a singles final to become the first WWE ID Champion, launching his championship reign with his finishing move, The Decafinator .
With these landmark victories, Kylie Rae and Cappuccino Jones now stand as the inaugural WWE ID Champions, marking a pivotal moment for WWE’s Independent Development program. Their wins not only validate WWE’s hybrid model—one that preserves the independent spirit while offering developmental pathways—but also underscore WWE ID’s mission to elevate indie wrestling and nurture the next generation of global talent.
August 1, 2025 will long be remembered as a watershed moment for the wrestling industry: the day WWE ID crowned its first champions and firmly established itself as the connective tissue between the independent scene and WWE’s developmental structure of EVOLVE, NXT, and beyond.
