WWE Monday Night RAW rolls into Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan, tonight with SummerSlam less than two weeks away and the red brand carrying plenty of unfinished business out of Madison Square Garden. Seth Rollins will open the show after Roman Reigns and Jalen Brunson turned his attempted ambush against him at Saturday Night’s Main Event, while LA Knight battles Jacob Fatu in the only match WWE has officially announced. Chad Gable will appear after earning an Intercontinental Championship opportunity against Penta, and Danhausen returns following one of the strangest victories of his career. The announced lineup is noticeably thin, but the number of unresolved stories surrounding Liv Morgan, IYO SKY, Oba Femi, Brock Lesnar, Lyra Valkyria, Bayley and The Vision gives WWE more than enough material to produce a meaningful chapter on the road to SummerSlam.

Last week’s RAW ended with Seth Rollins standing over Roman Reigns after a contract signing that finally dug beneath their familiar Shield history and reached the insecurity at the center of their rivalry.
Roman did not simply tell Seth that he was better than him. He argued that WWE had repeatedly attempted to position Seth as its leading man, only for injuries and Roman’s larger presence to prevent him from sustaining that position. Seth responded by rejecting Roman’s definition of success, insisting that he was proud of the man he became without needing to become Roman Reigns.
The verbal exchange worked because neither man was completely wrong.
Roman has been WWE’s defining attraction for most of the past decade. Seth has been the more consistent presence, but he has repeatedly existed beside Roman rather than above him. Seth’s strongest argument is that Roman has never been able to defeat him decisively when the pressure was greatest. Their 2022 Royal Rumble match ended with Roman losing by disqualification because he refused to release the Guillotine, proving that Seth remains capable of dragging Roman away from his discipline and into an emotional fight.
Seth won the physical exchange last Monday. He escaped Roman’s attempt to put him through the table, used the microphone as a weapon, delivered a Pedigree and planted the World Heavyweight Champion with a Stomp. RAW closed with Seth standing over Roman and appearing to have complete control of the rivalry.
Saturday Night’s Main Event reversed that image.
Roman entered Madison Square Garden beside New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson, only for Tyrese Haliburton to interrupt and create the distraction Seth needed to attack Roman from behind. Seth was not looking for another verbal exchange. He accepted a steel chair from Haliburton and attempted to deliver a chair-assisted Stomp that could have compromised Roman before SummerSlam.
Brunson stepped between them, Seth hesitated and Roman recovered. A Superman Punch and Spear left Seth retreating while Roman and Brunson stood tall.
The celebrity involvement generated the reaction WWE wanted inside Madison Square Garden, but the wrestling story beneath it was more important. Seth had already beaten Roman in a scheduled confrontation on RAW. At Saturday Night’s Main Event, he attempted to ambush him with another person and a steel chair, yet still failed.
Seth now has to explain that failure.
He can argue that Brunson saved Roman. Roman can respond that Seth needed Haliburton, a sneak attack and a weapon before he could even attempt to put him down. The rivalry cannot move forward tonight by repeating another pull-apart brawl or by having Seth deliver a slightly altered version of last week’s promo. Seth’s opening segment must reveal what his actual SummerSlam strategy has become.
Roman has not been officially announced for tonight, which may work in Seth’s favor as a character. Seth can control the narrative without Roman standing across from him, but that also creates the possibility of him becoming increasingly frustrated by Roman’s absence. Seth has spent much of this rivalry accusing Roman of disappearing, yet Roman left Madison Square Garden with the final word.
The World Heavyweight Championship match is already strong enough on history alone. WWE does not need to overload it with another celebrity, unnecessary stipulation or repeated faction interference. Seth and Roman are most compelling when they are attacking the truth behind each other’s public identities. Roman believes Seth has spent his career chasing him. Seth believes Roman has spent his career fearing the one man who can still get inside his head.
Tonight’s opening segment should sharpen that conflict rather than simply make it louder.
LA Knight against Jacob Fatu is the only confirmed match, but it carries direct SummerSlam consequences.
Knight will team with Solo Sikoa and Royce Keys against Fatu and The Usos in a six-man tag team match built around alliances that are unstable on both sides. Knight, Solo and Royce are not an established unit. They are three men whose problems with The Bloodline currently overlap. Jacob, Jimmy and Jey are connected by family, but their reunion has been shaped by Roman Reigns’ authority, Solo’s rejection and Jacob being forced to acknowledge Roman after losing Tribal Combat.
Last week, Royce’s match against Jimmy ended without a result when Jacob attacked. Solo appeared to be ready to return to his family, pleaded with Jacob to stop and briefly allowed Jimmy and Jacob to believe that reconciliation was possible.
It was a trap.
Solo attacked Jimmy and Jacob, Royce rejoined the fight and Knight arrived carrying a steel chair. The three cleared the ring before Knight issued the SummerSlam challenge.
Tonight’s singles match isolates the most explosive wrestler on each team. Knight can create immediate momentum with his right hands, stomps in the corner, jumping neckbreaker, powerslam and elbow drop, but he cannot afford to let the match become a prolonged power fight. Fatu absorbs punishment, changes direction with frightening speed and can end a match through the Samoan Drop, superkick, moonsault or Tongan Death Grip.
Knight’s best path is to keep Fatu moving, counter his explosiveness and create an opening for the BFT. Fatu’s path is to cut Knight off before the crowd can carry him into a sustained comeback.
The result matters, but the behavior surrounding the result matters more.
Will Solo protect Knight if The Usos become involved? Will Royce operate as part of a team or pursue his own fight with Jimmy? Can Jimmy and Jey control Jacob if he becomes consumed with destroying Knight? Does Knight trust either of the men standing beside him at SummerSlam?
A basic disqualification followed by all six men running out would be easy booking, but it would not reveal anything new. Tonight needs to expose which side is closer to collapsing.
The Bloodline team has deeper emotional connections, but those connections are also its greatest weakness. Solo knows exactly how badly his family wants him back and has already used that desire against them. Jacob’s place beside Roman and The Usos began through defeat rather than trust. Jimmy and Jey may believe they are rebuilding their family, but Roman’s version of unity still depends on everyone accepting his authority.
Knight’s team has fewer bonds, but it may also carry less emotional baggage. They do not have to love one another. They only have to remain aligned long enough to survive SummerSlam.
Chad Gable will also appear after winning last week’s Intercontinental Championship No. 1 Contender’s Gauntlet Match.
The Gauntlet was the strongest wrestling portion of last week’s RAW because every entrant served a clear purpose. Dominik Mysterio defeated Joe Hendry with help from JD McDonagh before Danhausen distracted him, allowing Je’Von Evans to connect with the OG Cutter. Je’Von then outlasted Dragon Lee before Rusev stopped his run with the Accolade.
Gable entered against Rusev, escaped the Accolade, sent him into the turnbuckle with a German suplex and caught him with a victory roll. Rusev attacked Gable after being eliminated, leaving him damaged before Ethan Page entered as the final participant.
Instead of stealing a desperate pin, Gable trapped Page in the Ankle Lock and forced him to submit.
That finish mattered. Gable did not simply survive the Gauntlet; he defeated two of its most dangerous competitors while working from a physical disadvantage. The performance made him look like a credible challenger rather than someone being placed into a championship match because SummerSlam is taking place in his home state.
Gable will now challenge Penta for the Intercontinental Championship in Minneapolis.
Their history gives WWE an easy foundation to build upon. Penta’s first WWE match came against Gable, and Penta won. Gable now returns to that rivalry attempting to capture his first singles championship while proving that he is no longer the same man Penta defeated during the most conflicted period of his career.
The match has the ingredients to become one of SummerSlam’s best pure wrestling contests. Gable’s takedowns, German suplexes and Ankle Lock give him a clear strategy: eliminate Penta’s space, attack the leg and prevent the champion from building speed. Penta will attempt to create separation for his kicks, sling blades, dives and sudden high-impact offense.
What the program still lacks is a meaningful confrontation between the champion and challenger.
The Gauntlet explained why Gable deserves the match. Tonight should explain how Penta views him. Respect alone will not be enough to sustain the remaining build. Penta can acknowledge Gable’s ability while questioning whether his redemption is real. Gable can admit that Penta beat him before while making it clear that SummerSlam is not about correcting one loss—it is about finally proving that his talent can produce a singles championship.
Rusev also remains an unresolved part of the story. Gable pinned him and survived his post-match attack, but he did not force Rusev to submit as he did Ethan Page. Rusev has every reason to believe Gable escaped him rather than conquered him. WWE should be careful not to overcrowd Penta and Gable’s championship program, but ignoring Rusev completely would make last week’s attack feel disposable.
Danhausen’s return follows his No Disqualification victory over JD McDonagh at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
The match leaned completely into sports entertainment. Dominik Mysterio interfered, The Judgment Day attacked the Minihausens and Danhausen used his cloning machine to reveal Karl-Anthony Towns. The Knicks star chokeslammed JD, drove Dominik through a table and helped create the opening for Danhausen to finish the match.
Madison Square Garden reacted exactly as WWE expected. The celebrity reveal worked in the building, and Danhausen’s strange world was given the biggest stage it has received since his arrival.
The question is what remains now that the surprise is over.
Dominik and JD can reasonably argue that Danhausen did not defeat them alone, even though they had already used their own numbers advantage throughout the match. Dominik has been embarrassed by Danhausen repeatedly, including being distracted out of last week’s Gauntlet.
Tonight needs to give the rivalry an actual destination. Another curse, machine or surprise appearance may produce another memorable clip, but it will not create progression by itself. Danhausen eventually needs a direct wrestling objective, and Dominik needs an opportunity to retaliate without every confrontation being decided by another trick.
Saturday Night’s Main Event also changed the direction of Lyra Valkyria and Bayley’s rivalry.
Lyra entered Madison Square Garden with a darker presentation after spending weeks attacking Bayley’s identity as a leader and mentor. She accused Bayley of allowing others to use her and reduced her reputation as a locker-room leader to evidence that she had become weak.
Their match became more violent when Bayley’s elbow legitimately busted Lyra’s nose. Instead of slowing Lyra down, the blood enhanced everything WWE had been attempting to establish about her transformation.
Bayley targeted the injury and applied the Crossface across Lyra’s damaged face. Lyra survived, countered the Bayley-to-Belly and trapped Bayley in a bulldog choke. Bayley did not submit. She lost consciousness and forced the referee to stop the match.
Lyra then returned to attack Bayley after the bell, reapplied the choke and delivered Nightwing onto the steel steps.
That was not the finish of a wrestler seeking one victory over a former friend. Lyra wanted to leave Bayley broken after already proving she could beat her.
The result was decisive enough that a routine rematch would feel unnecessary. Lyra insulted Bayley, used her own move against her on RAW, rendered her unconscious at Madison Square Garden and attacked her afterward. Continuing the rivalry at SummerSlam would require escalation, whether through a submission match, street fight or another stipulation that reflects the hatred Lyra has introduced.
WWE has not announced either woman for tonight. That absence may be intentional if Bayley is selling the attack, but Lyra should not disappear after the most important performance of her character transformation. She needs to explain why defeating Bayley was not enough.
The Women’s World Championship rivalry also requires immediate attention.
IYO SKY defeated Roxanne Perez last week despite Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez attempting to interfere. Sol Ruca ran out when Liv, Raquel and Roxanne attacked IYO after the match, but Raquel drove Sol into the barricade and ring-post area. Roxanne and Raquel restrained IYO while Liv struck her with the championship.
The structure was clear: IYO can beat the opponent standing in front of her, but Liv controls everything around the match.
That point has now been established. Repeating the same numbers-game attack tonight would not move the story forward.
IYO defeated Liv in the Queen of the Ring Final and selected her for SummerSlam. Liv has not erased that loss. She has surrounded herself with Raquel and Roxanne to prevent the title match from becoming a straightforward test between champion and challenger.
IYO needs to show that she has developed a countermeasure. Sol remains the logical ally, but she is also the Women’s Intercontinental Champion and should not exist only to make saves in another title program.
An IYO and Sol tag match against Liv and Raquel would connect both championship stories, but WWE also needs to begin establishing Sol’s own SummerSlam direction. Raquel or Roxanne could challenge her separately, although placing both women’s matches under the same Judgment Day interference cloud would risk making the division repetitive.
Oba Femi and Brock Lesnar are another major SummerSlam program absent from the announced lineup.
Last week’s fake-police angle allowed Oba to display his power without touching Brock, but it also softened a rivalry that should feel far more dangerous. Oba and Brock are tied at one victory apiece and will settle their trilogy inside Hell in a Cell. That story does not need fabricated restraining orders or staged law enforcement. It needs two monsters who believe the other has no right to survive their chosen environment.
Oba corrected the tone at Saturday Night’s Main Event by declaring that he would not be trapped with Brock—Brock would be trapped with him.
Tonight should build from that declaration. Brock needs to become an active participant in his own rivalry rather than allowing Paul Heyman to create every obstacle. Oba has already rejected a guaranteed world championship opportunity because defeating Brock matters more to him. The closer WWE gets to SummerSlam, the more the story must revolve around physical danger rather than avoidance.
The Vision’s attack on Alpha Academy also remains unresolved.
Maxxine Dupri exploited Otis’ feelings, stopped him from attacking Austin Theory and created the opening for The Vision to humiliate both Otis and Akira Tozawa. The betrayal worked because Alpha Academy represented the people who supported Maxxine while she was learning to wrestle.
What remains unclear is Maxxine’s complete motivation. Joining a stronger group is not enough. She needs to explain why she believes Otis, Tozawa and Alpha Academy were holding her back.
The Vision also remains overcrowded. Bron Breakker and Austin Theory are the World Tag Team Champions, Logan Paul remains the faction’s loudest personality, Maxxine has just joined and Paul Heyman has hinted that the group may no longer need him. The Street Profits have a legitimate claim to another title opportunity, while Otis and Tozawa want revenge.
With SummerSlam approaching, WWE needs to choose one clear direction instead of attempting to push every Vision-related story forward at the same time.

Final Thoughts
Tonight’s RAW has only one officially announced match, which is an extremely light lineup for a show airing less than two weeks before a two-night SummerSlam. That does not automatically mean the episode will be empty—WWE has enough unfinished stories to fill the entire broadcast—but the company can no longer afford to spend another week teasing directions without committing to them.
Seth Rollins opening the show should establish the emotional direction of his championship match with Roman Reigns. LA Knight and Jacob Fatu must reveal something new about the unstable teams heading into their six-man tag match. Chad Gable and Penta need their first meaningful championship confrontation. Danhausen’s issue with The Judgment Day needs a destination beyond the next comedy reveal.
More importantly, Liv Morgan and IYO SKY cannot remain trapped in the same repetitive numbers-game angle. Brock Lesnar must become more active in his rivalry with Oba Femi. Lyra Valkyria’s transformation cannot disappear for a week after the strongest performance of her current run. The World Tag Team Championship and Women’s Intercontinental Championship both need clear SummerSlam directions.
Last week’s RAW established several important matches, while Saturday Night’s Main Event created consequences that tonight must address. Detroit should not receive another episode focused primarily on holding patterns. The red brand has already assembled the pieces of a compelling SummerSlam card. Tonight is where WWE must finally start putting them together.
