Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide begins its three-week Verano de Escándalo special tonight from Arena San Marcos in Aguascalientes, Mexico, with an unlikely alliance headlining a focused opening-night card.
AAA Mega Champion Dominik Mysterio will stand beside the man expected to challenge him at TripleMania 34 when he teams with El Grande Americano against Daga and a mystery member of Los Perros del Mal. Lola Vice and Mr. Iguana will also defend the AAA World Mixed Tag Team Championship against La Hiedra and Laredo Kid, while AAA General Manager Rey Mysterio will open tonight’s broadcast with major announcements.
The lineup is not especially deep, but every advertised part of the show carries an immediate consequence. Los Perros del Mal will wrestle their first match since returning to terrorize AAA, the mixed tag titles are attached to one of the promotion’s most developed personal rivalries, and Rey Mysterio has another opportunity to clarify where AAA is heading throughout Verano de Escándalo and into TripleMania 34.

Dominik Mysterio and El Grande Americano Enter an Alliance Built on Distrust
Dominik Mysterio and El Grande Americano are not friends, and AAA should not attempt to convince anyone otherwise.
Dominik’s decision to protect Americano from Los Perros del Mal is rooted in self-interest. He expects Americano to eventually challenge him for the AAA Mega Championship at TripleMania 34 and claims he wants his future challenger healthy enough to make that match happen. It is a logical explanation, but it is coming from someone whose history makes every generous act feel like the beginning of a trap.
Americano therefore enters tonight’s main event with two different threats standing around him. Los Perros del Mal will be directly across the ring, but Dominik could be just as dangerous standing in his corner.
That uncertainty has made their temporary partnership more interesting than a conventional alliance. Dominik does not need to suddenly become honorable, and Americano should not look foolish enough to trust him completely. They only need to recognize that Los Perros have become a problem neither man can solve alone.
Daga has been confirmed as one of the two representatives for Los Perros del Mal, while his partner remains unannounced. Angel, Berto and Bronco Nima are all available possibilities, with Karmen Petrovic continuing to support the group from ringside. Keeping the second participant secret gives Los Perros an advantage and leaves open the possibility that the faction has something larger planned.
Tonight is also the faction’s first real opportunity to prove it is more than a collection of wrestlers attacking people with a numbers advantage.
Daga’s mission statement last week was strong. He presented Los Perros as a response to a wrestling business that has become too obsessed with popularity, approval and social media attention. According to him, the group has returned to restore danger to AAA and continue the legacy associated with the late Hijo del Perro Aguayo.
Those words created an identity, but tonight’s match must turn that identity into something tangible.
Los Perros cannot spend weeks ambushing Americano, deliver a passionate speech about being dangerous and then look completely ordinary once the bell rings. Even without winning, Daga and his partner need to make the main event feel violent, personal and difficult to control.
The most predictable direction would be Dominik betraying Americano. That possibility will hang over the match, but AAA does not need to rush toward it tonight. Allowing them to survive Los Perros while remaining visibly uncomfortable around each other would create more tension than an immediate turn everyone can see coming.
Dominik’s eventual betrayal will mean more after Americano has been given an actual reason to lower his guard.
Lola Vice and Mr. Iguana Defend Against La Hiedra and Laredo Kid
Lola Vice and Mr. Iguana will defend the AAA World Mixed Tag Team Championship against La Hiedra and Laredo Kid in tonight’s only advertised championship match.
La Hiedra and Laredo earned the opportunity last week by defeating Faby Apache and Joaquin Wilde. The result was never particularly difficult to predict after La Hiedra confronted the champions before the match and essentially promised she would see them at Verano de Escándalo, but AAA at least gave the challengers a legitimate route into the title match.
Laredo Kid makes La Hiedra more dangerous than she has been during her previous attempts to regain the championships.
La Hiedra has blamed her earlier failures on choosing the wrong partners. Laredo is a decorated former champion with considerably more experience than most of the people she has previously recruited. He also showed last week that he is willing to distract opponents, interfere from the floor and create whatever opening La Hiedra needs.
That gives the challengers an actual identity beyond La Hiedra’s lingering fixation on Mr. Iguana.
The personal history remains central to the rivalry. La Hiedra previously held the championship with Iguana and treated him more like an accessory than an equal. Iguana eventually found a more natural connection with Lola, and their growing chemistry led them to the titles.
La Hiedra has never accepted being replaced.
The romantic drama gives the match personality, but AAA must be careful not to reduce the championship to a prop in a telenovela. La Hiedra should be pursuing the titles because she wants to prove she can succeed without Iguana—not merely because she remains jealous whenever Lola shows him affection.
Lola and Iguana have become one of AAA’s most naturally popular pairings, but popularity alone cannot sustain a championship reign. They need meaningful defenses against teams capable of exposing their weaknesses.
La Hiedra and Laredo are credible enough to do that. Laredo can match Lola’s speed and athleticism, while La Hiedra understands Iguana well enough to manipulate his emotions. The challengers are also more willing to cheat, creating a believable path toward a title change without making the champions look weak.
AAA now has to decide whether this is La Hiedra’s final failed attempt or the beginning of a completely different version of the division.
Another loss would make it difficult to justify keeping her attached to the champions. A victory would end one of AAA’s most popular title reigns but establish La Hiedra and Laredo as a genuinely dangerous combination.
Either result needs to move the story forward. Repeating the same jealousy spots and interference without a meaningful consequence would only extend a rivalry that has already received several chapters.
Rey Mysterio Opens Tonight With Major Announcements
AAA has advertised General Manager Rey Mysterio to open tonight’s broadcast with major announcements, although the promotion has not revealed what he intends to address.
That uncertainty is useful because several important issues require clarification.
Verano de Escándalo was taped as one major event but will be distributed across three weekly broadcasts. AAA has already announced matches for August 1 and August 8, including Fenix defending the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship against Mini Vikingo, Flammer defending the AAA Reina de Reinas Championship against La Catalina and Lady Shani, and additional qualifiers for the vacant AAA Latin American Championship.
The rollout has been unnecessarily confusing.
Some promotional material has advertised the entire Verano de Escándalo lineup as though every match were occurring tonight, while AAA’s final show-specific advertisement lists only the mixed tag championship match, the Los Perros del Mal tag match and Rey’s announcements.
Rey needs to establish a clear schedule instead of making viewers determine which advertised matches belong to which episode.
The vacant AAA Latin American Championship will likely remain an important subject throughout the three-week special. El Hijo del Vikingo was forced to relinquish the championship following knee surgery, leading Rey to create four Triple Threat qualifiers. El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. won the first qualifier last week and will advance to the Fatal Four-Way championship match at TripleMania 34.
Even when Rey’s announcements are primarily administrative, his presence has become valuable because AAA is surrounded by instability.
A championship has been vacated, Los Perros del Mal are attacking wrestlers without permission, Dominik continues operating according to his own agenda, and AAA’s increasing use of WWE talent has created questions about how much room remains for the promotion’s established roster.
Rey has been positioned as the person attempting to organize that chaos. Tonight’s announcements need to feel important enough to justify opening one of AAA’s signature events rather than being another collection of dates and matches that could have been posted online.
Can Verano de Escándalo Week One Feel Like More Than an Advertisement?
Tonight’s announced card is lean.
AAA is presenting only two confirmed matches, with Rey Mysterio’s opening announcements serving as the third major attraction. That format can work for a one-hour broadcast, but it leaves very little room for anything to underdeliver.
The mixed tag championship match should provide the strongest traditional wrestling. Lola Vice, Mr. Iguana, La Hiedra and Laredo Kid already have a clear story and enough contrasting personalities to carry a substantial portion of the episode.
The main event carries the heavier storyline responsibility.
Los Perros del Mal need a meaningful first match. Dominik Mysterio and El Grande Americano need to advance their uneasy partnership without becoming inexplicably trusting. AAA also needs to leave the audience with a reason to return for the second week beyond simply announcing that more matches are coming.
That is the real challenge with the three-week presentation.
Verano de Escándalo was recorded as one event, but each broadcast must still feel complete. Week One cannot merely introduce stories that will become important on August 1 or August 8. Something consequential needs to happen tonight.
The card does not offer much quantity, but it has enough tension to deliver a strong episode. Whether it does will depend on AAA resisting the urge to overcrowd the main event with interference, mystery reveals and an obvious Dominik betrayal all at once.
Sometimes the better scandal is the one AAA forces viewers to continue waiting for.
