AEW Announces Complete Lineup for 2025 Continental Classic; Okada Set for Brutal Unified Title Defense in Round-Robin War

AEW NEWS: The Continental Classic Returns — and This Year, the Stakes Are Higher Than Ever

In a gripping selection special aired just days ago, AEW officially locked in the full 12-wrestler field for the 2025 Continental Classic, setting the stage for a dramatic and hard-fought round-robin tournament beginning Wednesday on AEW Dynamite. With Kazuchika Okada, now the Unified Champion, defending under the brutal but pure “Continental Rules,” the pressure mounts for a landmark title defense.

The Field Is Set — Every Competitor Locked In

AEW has confirmed the participants for the 2025 Continental Classic, dividing them into two six-person “leagues”: Gold and Blue.

Here’s the full breakdown:

  • Gold League: Darby Allin; PAC; Kevin Knight; “Speedball” Mike Bailey; Kyle Fletcher; Kazuchika Okada
  • Blue League: Konosuke Takeshita; Jon Moxley; Claudio Castagnoli; Orange Cassidy; Roderick Strong; Máscara Dorada

This mix of rugged veterans, high-flyers, and seasoned submission experts provides a rich tapestry of styles — and potential storylines.

What Is the Continental Classic? — Format & Rules Explained

To fully grasp what’s on the line, here’s how the Continental Classic works:

  1. Tournament Structure
    • It’s a two-block round-robin tournament.
    • Each wrestler in a block faces all other members in their league; with six competitors per block, that means five matches per person.
    • After round-robin play, the top finishers advance to the knockout stage: semifinal matchups, then a final at the Worlds End pay-per-view, set for December 27, 2025.
  2. Continental Rules
    • Every match is contested under special Continental Rules: a 20-minute time limit, no one allowed at ringside, and outside interference is strictly prohibited.
    • Points are awarded like a league system: 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 for a loss.
    • Ties in the standings are broken using head-to-head results.
  3. Prize / Stakes
    • The winner of the Continental Classic is rewarded with the AEW Continental Championship (or, in 2025, the more formally Unified Championship).
    • Notably, for 2025 the title is being referred to as the AEW Unified Championship, following the unification of the Continental and International Championships.
    • Importantly, Okada, as the reigning Unified Champion (and previous Classic winner), must win the tournament final to continue his reign.

A Look Back: Legacy & Previous Champions

  • 2023 (Inaugural Classic): The very first Continental Classic was won by Eddie Kingston, who defeated Jon Moxley in the final.
  • 2024: Kazuchika Okada claimed the crown by defeating Will Ospreay in the final.
  • Okada’s victory last year granted him his first Continental title, and he has carried that momentum into this year as the Unified Champion, now tasked with defending in tournament form.

What Makes 2025 Different — Why This Classic Feels Bigger

  1. Unified Championship on the Line: Unlike past editions, this year’s tournament winner walks away with the Unified Championship, merging two lineages.
  2. High-Stakes Rivalries:
    • Okada vs. Takeshita: Tension simmers inside the Don Callis Family. Takeshita, fresh from his NJPW exploits, enters looking not just for glory, but control.
    • Veteran vs. Youth: With Roderick Strong, Orange Cassidy, and others in the mix, the Classic provides a battleground where experience clashes with ambition.
  3. Purity of Competition: The strict Continental Rules — no ringside, no interference, 20-minute clock — strip away drama external to the ring and force competitors to rely on skill, strategy, and endurance.
  4. Storytelling Vehicle: The very format is perfect for long-form storytelling: weekly league matches, shifting momentum, potential upsets, and evolving character arcs, all culminating in a high-stakes final at Worlds End.
