Today, during this year’s Upfronts event, Amazon announced a reboot of the highly successful show American Gladiators. The company also revealed that the host will be none other than two-time WWE Grand Slam Champion Mike “The Miz” Mizanin.
American Gladiators originally debuted in syndication on September 9, 1989. The show ran for seven seasons before being canceled on May 11, 1996. It was later revived by NBC in 2008 for two seasons, hosted by WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan and undefeated professional boxer Laila Ali.
Here is a quote about the reboot from the General Manager of Amazon’s entertainment company:
“We’re excited to officially welcome WWE Superstar Mike ‘The Miz’ Mizanin to the American Gladiators Family. He’s the perfect host for the new era of this iconic franchise,” said Barry Poznick, general manager of MGM Alternative, Evolution Media and Big Fish Entertainment. “The U.S. reboot, combined with our epic success in the U.K., our Live Nation Tour and the launch of our 24/7 Gladiators FAST channel — this isn’t just a comeback, it’s a cultural revival. Fans, old and new, are going to love this evolution in sports entertainment.”
When asked about the cast and challenges for the reboot, it was revealed that the new Gladiators will include bodybuilders, Division I athletes, and CrossFit champions. The series will introduce brand-new challenges alongside classic fan favorites such as “Gauntlet,” “Hang Tough,” and “The Eliminator.”
Mizanin first rose to fame on the tenth season of MTV’s The Real World, where he introduced his alter ego, The Miz. With dreams of becoming a professional wrestler, he later competed on The Challenge, MTV’s reality competition spinoff. Mizanin appeared on five seasons (Battle of the Seasons, The Gauntlet, The Inferno, Battle of the Sexes 2, and The Inferno 2), winning two (Battle of the Seasons and The Inferno 2).

I’m the quiet one until the bell rings then I’ve got takes. I live for WWE NXT and TNA, I want every promotion to succeed, and I will absolutely roast the bad decisions on sight (because someone has to). Anime taught me to respect long-term storytelling; wrestling taught me that sometimes the plan is “we panicked” and called it “unpredictable.” The Miz got me into all of this, so yeah I appreciate confidence, commitment, and the art of talking like you’re already the main event. Now I bring that same energy to the page as the main writer for Late Night Crew Wrestling because if you’re not here to be must-see and tell the truth, why are you here?!
