WWE NXT September 29, 2026 puts two championships and two Dusty Classic quarterfinal places on the line tonight at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, airing at 8 p.m. ET on The CW. Grayson Waller has questioned whether Mason Rook can handle the pressure of being NXT Champion. Tonight, he has to prove he can keep the title away from him. Zaria faces Thea Hail with considerably less room to dismiss her challenger after last week’s pinfall, while Fraxiom and BirthRight enter a tournament that has already produced an upset. With Halloween Havoc approaching, tonight needs to turn last week’s strongest confrontations into results that carry some weight.

Last week’s September 22 episode gave tonight a stronger foundation by letting several stories develop beyond another interruption or backstage argument. The Dusty Classic opened with Noam Dar and Romeo Moreno eliminating Los Americanos, Thea Hail pinned a champion, and Mason Rook finally had an extended opportunity to answer Grayson Waller. There were still too many shortcuts elsewhere, but the most important matches tonight have reasons to happen.
Rook earned his title opportunity on September 15 by defeating Tony D’Angelo and Saquon Shugars in a triple threat, with Tristan Angels interfering against Shugars. Last week’s closing confrontation then gave the challenger something a contender’s victory alone could not establish: a personality capable of standing opposite Waller. The champion leaned heavily on jokes about Rook’s weight before arguing that his conditioning and commitment would fail him under pressure. The endurance question gave the match a direction. The repeated food jokes added considerably less.
Rook answered by turning Waller’s return to NXT against him, taking shots involving Austin Theory and The Vision before threatening to overwhelm him physically. The crowd responded, and Waller helped the exchange by reacting as though those comments had landed. Rook came out of the segment with a reason for viewers to care about seeing him win.
Tonight should follow through on that argument. Waller has challenged Rook’s ability to last, so his strategy should test it. Rook needs sustained stretches of control and a convincing response when the champion starts taking him apart. A title change would accelerate his rise, but even a defeat can establish him if the performance holds up. An inconclusive finish would need a substantial payoff to justify postponing the issue after that strong final exchange.
Zaria’s defense has a similarly clear foundation. Hail previously forced her to submit during their September 8 confrontation; that was a physical angle, not an official match victory. Last week, Hail added an actual pinfall when she teamed with AAA Reina de Reinas Champion La Catalina against Zaria and NXT Women’s Champion Kelani Jordan. Zaria attempted the F-5, Hail countered into a cover, and the challenger earned tonight’s opportunity.
That gives Hail two specific threats: the submission that has already troubled Zaria and the ability to catch her when she overcommits. Her energy works best when it feeds that persistence. Tonight should make the champion work to contain her. Zaria, meanwhile, needs a performance that restores some authority after spending the buildup getting frustrated and outmaneuvered.
Izzi Dame’s involvement complicates that job. Last week, Dame embarrassed Zaria with footage from a school production, pulling the champion’s attention away from the woman who had just pinned her. There is a possible story in someone exposing insecurity beneath Zaria’s intimidating presentation. So far, the humiliation has been clearer than the motivation. Another distraction tonight would risk making the championship secondary to Dame’s games. Kelani Jordan also needs a stronger individual direction after sharing last week’s tag match without being its central issue.
The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic offered the clearest wrestling success last week. Cody Rhodes narrated the opening tribute and confirmed he would present the trophy to the eventual winners. First held in 2015, the tournament returns after the 2024 edition won by Bron Breakker and Baron Corbin. Its history gives the trophy some prestige. Dar and Moreno’s opening match gave viewers a reason to care about who gets to lift it.
Dar and Moreno defeated Rayo Americano and Bravo Americano after a competitive match built around isolation, timely tags and increasingly convincing near falls. The crowd’s “This is awesome” chants reflected how effectively the closing stretch created uncertainty. Eliminating Los Americanos gave Dar and Moreno a meaningful result against opponents with an established identity. Their next appearance now comes with evidence that they belong in the tournament’s later rounds.
The Creed Brothers advanced in a different fashion, overpowering Harley Riggins and Jax Presley. Julius Creed and Brutus Creed brought the credibility of their 2022 tournament victory, but the Evolve pair received little introduction before being eliminated. The result established the Creeds as a threat without doing much to explain why viewers should remember the team they beat. With fourteen teams involved, the tournament should be developing interest in its unfamiliar entrants as well as moving its favorites forward.
That makes Fraxiom against DarkState particularly important tonight. Nathan Frazer and Axiom bring the familiarity and coordination that can make Cutler James and Osiris Griffin’s offense feel consequential. DarkState already defeated Sean Legacy and Dorian Van Dux on September 15 with help from Dion Lennox. Tonight offers James and Griffin a chance to show how much they can accomplish against a proven team. The winners face Dar and Moreno, making the reward immediately tangible.
Lennox also has a separate problem after last week’s confrontation with Cruz Montana. Montana attacked the legitimacy of Lennox’s path into wrestling, and Lennox retaliated with personal comments about Montana’s background and family before the argument became a fight. The exchange gave their hostility a more specific basis. Following it with another generic faction beatdown would waste the strongest part of the segment. Their conflict could also complicate DarkState’s tournament ambitions, although a singles match between them is not on tonight’s advertised card.
BirthRight enters its first-round match with a win from last week, though the manner of that victory leaves plenty to prove. Lexis King, Stacks and Uriah Connors defeated Zilla Fatu, Sean Legacy and EK Prosper after Arianna Grace’s distraction disrupted the closing sequence. Fatu remained a major physical problem for the group, and King escaped another confrontation afterward. BirthRight survived, but the finish did little to establish its superiority.
Tonight, Stacks and Connors face Mini Vikingo and Chazz “Starboy” Hall for the right to meet NXT Tag Team Champions Vanity Project. That gives BirthRight a direct route toward the champions. It also gives Vikingo and Hall a chance to establish themselves with the NXT audience. They need enough room to demonstrate a partnership and make an upset believable. Another match in which the less familiar team exists mainly to absorb the finish would limit the tournament’s value.
One development since last week changes the other side of the bracket. Van Dux missed the six-man tag because he was not cleared following a punctured lung, prompting Prosper to replace him. However, a September 27 update confirmed Van Dux had been cleared to compete. He and Legacy remain set to face Tokyo Bad Boys. Legacy’s decision to protect his partner now has a useful payoff: their tournament opportunity remains intact. The focus shifts back to what they can accomplish together.
Myles Borne’s return tonight needs to move his story forward just as clearly. Two weeks ago, his supposed reconciliation with Tavion Heights ended in another assault, including an attack on Heights’ ankle with a chair. Last week revisited that betrayal and advertised Borne’s return. Tonight gives him the opportunity to explain how losing his championships became a justification for attacking his partner. The cruelty is already established. His explanation needs enough personal conviction to sustain the feud beyond its next confrontation.
Elsewhere, Reina Volcan’s return left Skylar Raye with a compromised victory over Kali Armstrong after Volcan attacked both women. Volcan’s next appearance should explain why she targeted both opponents. Kendal Grey’s session with a sports psychologist explored her frustration at being sidelined. The audience understands that she misses competing and wants her championship back. Those segments should now show how the setback is changing her approach to that goal.
Shiloh Hill and Saquon Shugars also pressed Robert Stone about their problems with Naraku and Tristan Angels. Stone entertained possible matches, but those conversations should be kept separate from tonight’s confirmed lineup. There is enough happening across the roster without treating every suggested encounter as an official announcement.
Halloween Havoc is scheduled for Saturday, October 31, giving tonight’s results time to develop into meaningful October programs. Waller’s title defense can establish Rook’s place near the top of the card. Zaria and Hail can settle whether the challenger’s recent success translates when the championship is at stake. Borne can give his betrayal a coherent motive, and the Dusty Classic can continue building teams viewers want to follow. Those are practical steps toward a stronger event; another week of postponing consequences would make the extra time count for little.

Final Thoughts
Tonight has a card capable of rewarding the attention last week earned. Waller and Rook need to deliver on their confrontation, Zaria needs to make Hail’s challenge feel consequential, and the Dusty Classic needs to keep producing teams worth investing in. Borne’s return adds a personal issue that should demand an answer. The route to Halloween Havoc is taking shape. Tonight needs decisive progress and performances that justify the buildup.
