Roman Reigns and Jacob Fatu have gone from trying to destroy each other to forming one of the most dangerous relationships on WWE Raw. Roman spent months trying to beat Fatu into submission. He fought him at Backlash, survived him in Tribal Combat and watched Jacob openly reject his authority before eventually forcing him back underneath The Bloodline umbrella. Somewhere along the way, however, Roman figured out something far more effective than trying to tame Jacob Fatu: stop trying to change him.
Instead, Roman learned how to validate him.
That is what made the closing moments of last week’s Monday Night Raw so important. Jacob didn’t simply defeat Royce Keys in a brutal Street Fight. He kept going after the match was already over, trapped Keys’ head inside a steel chair and left a man he once considered family needing medical attention.
Then Roman Reigns appeared.
He didn’t stop Jacob.
He didn’t look disappointed.
He approved.
Heading into tonight’s Monday Night Raw, that small nod from Roman might be more important than almost anything else happening around the World Heavyweight Champion. WWE may have quietly revealed what this latest version of The Bloodline is really becoming.
Roman hasn’t controlled Jacob Fatu by making him less dangerous.
He has convinced Jacob to be dangerous for him.
Roman Reigns and Jacob Fatu Have Created WWE Raw’s Most Dangerous Relationship
The relationship between Roman Reigns and Jacob Fatu has always been different from Roman’s relationships with Jimmy Uso, Jey Uso or Solo Sikoa.
Roman could psychologically break Jey down.
He could manipulate Jimmy through family loyalty.
He could take Solo’s devotion and turn it into obedience.
Jacob Fatu entered Roman’s world already believing he was powerful enough to challenge him.
That is why their history matters.
After WrestleMania 42, Jacob didn’t fall in line behind the new World Heavyweight Champion. He challenged him. Roman defeated him at Backlash, but Jacob attacked Roman after the match and completely lost control, putting him back in the Tongan Death Grip while also going after officials who tried to intervene.
Roman responded by saying Jacob didn’t belong in WWE.
That didn’t solve anything.
Jacob later crashed Roman’s Acknowledgment Ceremony and destroyed Roman, Jimmy and Jey Uso.
Roman eventually beat Jacob again in Tribal Combat at Clash in Italy, with the stipulation effectively forcing Jacob back underneath Roman and the reunited Bloodline.
Roman won the fight.
The much bigger problem was figuring out what to do with Jacob afterward.
Trying to make Jacob another obedient Bloodline soldier would have stripped away everything that makes Jacob Fatu interesting. WWE couldn’t spend months presenting him as an uncontrollable monster and suddenly have him standing quietly behind Roman waiting for instructions.
So Roman changed tactics.
He stopped trying to make Jacob smaller.
He started making him feel bigger.
The Ula Fala Changed Everything
When Roman officially welcomed Jacob into The Bloodline and presented him with his own Ula Fala, it wasn’t just another family ceremony.
Roman gave Jacob status.
More importantly, he made it clear that Jacob didn’t need to answer to Jimmy or Jey.
Jacob acknowledged Roman.
That was enough.
This created a direct relationship between Roman and Jacob that bypassed the rest of The Bloodline.
That was smart because Roman finally understood the kind of person he was dealing with.
Jacob Fatu was never going to respond well to being treated like hired muscle.
But tell Jacob that he is special?
Tell him he belongs directly beside the Tribal Chief?
Give him Bloodline symbolism of his own?
Allow him to remain exactly as violent and unpredictable as he already was?
Now Roman isn’t suppressing Jacob’s personality.
He is validating it.
That became obvious almost immediately when Jacob attacked Eric André after André touched his Ula Fala, with Roman encouraging the situation.
The message was becoming clear.
Roman didn’t care how violent Jacob became.
He cared about where the violence was pointed.
Royce Keys Became a Threat Without Ever Threatening Roman’s Championship
That brings everything back to Royce Keys.
Royce’s biggest problem wasn’t that he wanted Roman Reigns’ World Heavyweight Championship.
He wasn’t trying to become Tribal Chief.
He represented something much more personal.
Royce knew Jacob before Roman controlled this version of The Bloodline.
Their friendship went back years, and WWE repeatedly leaned into Royce trying to remind Jacob that their bond existed outside Roman’s definition of family.
At one point, Royce literally screamed at Jacob, “That’s not you.”
That line mattered.
Royce wasn’t telling Jacob that he had suddenly become violent. Anybody who knows Jacob Fatu knows violence isn’t new.
Royce was telling him that Roman Reigns was changing what that violence represented.
The question was no longer whether Jacob could hurt somebody.
The question was why he was doing it.
Jacob gradually started choosing The Bloodline over Royce.
He attacked him.
He cost him opportunities.
He repeatedly warned him to stay away.
And last week, Roman finally pushed the situation over the edge.
Roman Reigns Defined Royce Keys as the Enemy
The most important part of Jacob Fatu versus Royce Keys happened before the Street Fight ever started.
Roman confronted The Bloodline over its SummerSlam loss and made it clear that losing wasn’t acceptable.
Then he turned his attention directly toward Jacob’s relationship with Royce.
Roman dismissed Royce as somebody outside the family. He reduced him to “one of the boys” and warned Jacob not to let friendships interfere with what actually mattered.
Family came first.
More specifically, Roman’s definition of family came first.
Later, Royce tried to reach Jacob again.
Jacob rejected him.
And most importantly, Jacob repeated Roman’s language.
Royce wasn’t family anymore.
He was just one of the boys.
That is where Roman’s influence becomes far more interesting than another wrestler simply obeying the Tribal Chief.
Roman had gotten inside Jacob’s head.
He didn’t need to walk Jacob to the ring and explicitly tell him to destroy Royce.
Roman defined the situation.
Jacob handled the rest.
Jacob Fatu Didn’t Need to Destroy Royce Keys After the Match
The Street Fight itself was violent enough.
Jacob and Royce beat the hell out of each other with chairs, tables and everything available before Jacob eventually trapped Keys in the Tongan Death Grip and forced the referee to stop the match.
It was over.
Jacob won.
If this were only about beating Royce Keys, there was nothing left to prove.
Then Jacob kept going.
Officials tried to intervene.
Jacob attacked Royce again.
He trapped Keys’ head inside a steel chair and drove himself into him in the corner.
Royce was left needing medical attention and ultimately had to be stretchered out.
Then Roman appeared.
That is where the entire night came together.
Earlier, Roman told Jacob that Royce wasn’t family.
Jacob rejected Royce.
Jacob beat Royce.
Jacob continued hurting Royce after beating him.
Roman appeared and approved.
That wasn’t just Roman enjoying violence.
It looked like Roman seeing proof that Jacob understood the lesson.
Roman Reigns Has Found a Smarter Way to Manipulate Jacob Fatu
This is what separates Roman’s relationship with Jacob from almost everyone else who has stood underneath him.
Roman controlled Jey Uso by breaking him down.
He may be controlling Jacob Fatu by building him up.
That is far more dangerous.
Roman doesn’t tell Jacob to stop being a monster.
He tells Jacob that being a monster makes him valuable.
Roman gives him status.
Roman gives him an Ula Fala.
Roman allows him to ignore Jimmy and Jey’s authority.
Roman validates the violence.
Roman only asks for acknowledgment in return.
It is manipulation through empowerment.
Roman’s message to Jacob is essentially simple:
Be exactly who you are.
Just be that person for me.
For somebody like Jacob Fatu, that may be the only form of control that was ever going to work.
But Roman Reigns Is Playing With Something He Already Knows He Cannot Fully Control
There is one gigantic flaw in Roman’s plan.
Jacob Fatu has already shown exactly what happens when he decides Roman Reigns is the enemy.
He attacked Roman after Backlash.
He destroyed him during the Acknowledgment Ceremony.
He fought him in Tribal Combat without fear.
Roman knows firsthand that Jacob’s loyalty is not unconditional.
That makes what Roman is doing incredibly risky.
Roman is effectively making Jacob more confident, more dangerous and more important inside The Bloodline while hoping Jacob never redirects that energy back toward him.
That works as long as Jacob continues believing Roman’s approval matters.
What happens when it doesn’t?
That is where this story eventually becomes fascinating.
The Usos Should Be Watching Jacob Fatu Closely
Jimmy and Jey Uso might have just as much reason to worry as Roman does.
Jacob has already made it clear that he acknowledges Roman, not them.
Roman’s response wasn’t to correct him.
Roman rewarded him.
That creates a strange hierarchy inside The Bloodline.
Roman is clearly at the top.
But Jacob has effectively been given his own direct line to the Tribal Chief.
Jimmy and Jey don’t control him.
They don’t necessarily influence him.
And if Roman increasingly starts trusting Jacob because Jacob is willing to do things the Usos won’t, that dynamic can become ugly quickly.
WWE doesn’t need another immediate Bloodline betrayal.
The better story is allowing that discomfort to breathe.
Let Jimmy notice that Roman keeps excusing Jacob.
Let Jey notice Roman validating violence he might have condemned from somebody else.
Let Jacob continue believing Roman is the only member of the family whose opinion matters.
The cracks are already there without WWE needing to force them.
Solo Sikoa Makes Roman’s Definition of Family Even More Complicated
Solo Sikoa also remains important to everything happening here.
Jacob has repeatedly demanded that Solo return to the family.
Solo continues resisting.
That creates an interesting contrast.
Solo represents somebody who walked away from Roman’s hierarchy.
Jacob represents somebody Roman defeated and brought back underneath it.
Royce Keys repeatedly tried to remind Jacob that he had meaningful relationships outside The Bloodline.
Solo proves that somebody can actually leave.
That might be one reason Jacob has been so aggressive about bringing Solo back.
Solo’s independence challenges the entire idea Roman has sold Jacob.
If Solo can walk away and still consider himself family, then Roman doesn’t get to decide who counts.
And Roman’s entire system depends on being the person who decides.
Roman Reigns Hasn’t Changed Nearly as Much as WWE Wants You to Believe
This story also exposes something important about Roman himself.
Roman may be treated more like a babyface today.
The crowds chant for him.
He is World Heavyweight Champion.
He finally defeated Seth Rollins at SummerSlam.
He regularly stands opposite wrestlers WWE presents as bigger villains.
But underneath the OTC presentation, many of Roman’s worst Tribal Chief instincts are still there.
He criticizes his family when they fail.
He decides which relationships are legitimate.
He determines who belongs.
He rewards loyalty.
He punishes independence.
And now he is using Jacob Fatu’s violence as another extension of his authority.
Roman might smile more.
He might receive louder cheers.
That doesn’t mean the Tribal Chief disappeared.
Last week showed that he is still very much alive.
LA Knight’s Criticism of Roman Reigns Suddenly Hits Harder
LA Knight accused Roman last week of continuing to benefit from The Bloodline while demanding another opportunity at his World Heavyweight Championship.
Roman dismissed him.
But look at what Roman did later that same night.
He immediately went backstage and tightened his grip over his family following their SummerSlam loss.
That makes Knight’s criticism difficult to completely dismiss.
Roman proved at SummerSlam that he could finally defeat Seth Rollins.
But his overall power still extends far beyond what happens between the ropes.
Roman controls an entire family structure around himself.
Jacob Fatu may now be the most frightening part of it.
Tonight’s WWE Raw Doesn’t Need Roman Reigns vs. Jacob Fatu
WWE would be making a mistake if it rushed directly toward another Roman Reigns and Jacob Fatu match.
They have already wrestled twice.
The relationship needs to evolve before a third match means anything.
Right now, the much more interesting story is watching Roman become increasingly comfortable depending on Jacob.
Let Jacob become Roman’s most dangerous weapon.
Let Roman reward him.
Let The Usos become uncomfortable.
Let Jacob continue cutting himself off from people outside The Bloodline.
Let Roman eventually reach the point where he needs Jacob more than Jacob needs him.
That is when the relationship becomes truly dangerous.
Because Roman Reigns has spent years creating followers who believe they need him.
Jacob Fatu might eventually become the first one powerful enough to realize the opposite.
The Smallest Jacob Fatu Moment Tonight Could Tell Us Everything
The biggest thing to watch tonight might not be another attack.
It could be Jacob’s reaction to what he did.
Does he show any remorse over Royce Keys being stretchered out?
Does somebody bring up their former friendship?
Does Jimmy or Jey question whether Jacob went too far?
Does Roman reinforce his approval?
Does Jacob visibly care that Roman was pleased?
Those details matter because Royce’s repeated insistence that this isn’t the Jacob Fatu he once knew should not simply disappear.
If Jacob shows absolutely nothing, Roman’s influence is deeper than ever.
If Jacob hesitates even slightly, the person Royce remembers might still exist underneath everything Roman has built around him.
Roman Reigns finally appears to have figured out how to control the one member of The Bloodline who once seemed impossible to control. He didn’t make Jacob Fatu less dangerous. He made Jacob believe that being dangerous earns Roman Reigns’ respect. For Roman, that may be his smartest move yet. Eventually, it could also become his biggest mistake — and that is why the Roman Reigns and Jacob Fatu relationship should be one of the most important stories to watch on WWE Raw tonight.
