Chelsea Green Injury: WWE Women’s Champion Suffers Broken Orbital Bone Days After SummerSlam Win

The Chelsea Green injury could not have happened at a worse possible time for WWE or its suddenly snake-bitten SmackDown women’s division.

Less than one week after finally reaching the top of WWE’s women’s division by winning the Interim WWE Women’s Championship at SummerSlam Night 2, Green confirmed that she suffered a broken orbital bone during last night’s WWE Friday Night SmackDown. The injury came on the same night WWE effectively legitimized Green’s reign by removing the “interim” designation and recognizing her as the WWE Women’s Champion.

Now WWE has somehow ended up in an even messier situation than the interim championship was supposed to solve.

Rhea Ripley is already sidelined following knee surgery. Green was supposed to be the answer to that problem. Instead, WWE’s newly established champion is now injured herself, leaving the company with major questions surrounding the championship and the immediate direction of the SmackDown women’s division.

Chelsea Green Injury Confirmed After WWE SmackDown

Bryan Alvarez of Wrestling Observer/F4WOnline was the first to report Saturday night that Green suffered an injury during last night’s SmackDown.

Green later confirmed the report herself and revealed that the injury is a broken orbital bone.

Green teamed with WWE Women’s United States Champion Tiffany Stratton against WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid of Fatal Influence. Jacy Jayne interfered late in the match, hitting Green with the Rolling Encore before Henley and Reid finished her off with the Fatal Flaw.

What happened afterward now looks considerably more important.

Nia Jax and Lash Legend attacked following the match, but Green was noticeably protected from taking additional physical contact. Referee Ryan Tran kept Jax and Legend away from her while the post-match angle continued around Green.

We now know why.

Green said afterward that she ended up in the emergency room and was diagnosed with a broken orbital bone. She admitted that she does not yet know exactly what the injury means for her immediate future and expressed understandable frustration over suffering another setback at arguably the biggest moment of her WWE career.

That uncertainty is the biggest part of this story right now.

There has been no confirmed timetable for Green’s return.

Chelsea Green Had Finally Become WWE Women’s Champion

That is what makes the Chelsea Green injury so brutal.

Green survived a five-woman ladder match against Charlotte Flair, Tiffany Stratton, Jade Cargill and Lash Legend at SummerSlam Night 2 to capture the Interim WWE Women’s Championship.

It was arguably the biggest victory of her WWE career.

The interim championship had been created because Ripley’s knee injury left WWE without an active WWE Women’s Champion. Initially, the concept gave WWE a way to keep Ripley recognized as champion while simultaneously allowing SmackDown to have a functioning titleholder.

Then Ripley underwent surgery.

That changed everything.

Last night, WWE finally moved away from the awkward interim situation and Green became the WWE Women’s Champion without the qualifier hanging over her reign.

It should have been the beginning of Chelsea Green getting an actual opportunity to prove what she could do as the centerpiece of the division.

Instead, within hours, WWE was dealing with another injured WWE Women’s Champion.

You genuinely could not script worse timing.

What Does the Chelsea Green Injury Mean for the WWE Women’s Championship?

The most important thing WWE should do right now is avoid panicking.

A broken orbital bone does not automatically mean Green will miss several months, and until Green is evaluated further and WWE has a legitimate recovery timetable, immediately stripping her of the championship would be premature.

There is also a massive difference between Green missing a few weeks and Green being unavailable for several months.

If this is a relatively short absence, WWE should keep the WWE Women’s Championship on her.

Green can remain an active television character without wrestling. In fact, there may not be another woman on the roster better equipped to keep herself relevant without competing every week.

Her personality, promo ability and character work can carry television segments while WWE builds challengers around her.

But if the Chelsea Green injury requires an extended absence, WWE has a much bigger problem.

Creating another interim championship would be ridiculous.

WWE already used the interim concept because Ripley could not defend the championship. Green won that championship, WWE removed the interim designation, and now Green herself is injured.

Introducing an interim champion for a champion who originally became champion through an interim championship would turn an already convoluted situation into a parody.

If Green cannot return within a reasonable timeframe, WWE may eventually have no choice but to vacate the WWE Women’s Championship completely and crown another champion.

That should be the last option, not the first.

Rhea Ripley and Chelsea Green Being Injured Changes SmackDown

This is bigger than Green.

WWE has now lost the two women directly connected to the WWE Women’s Championship picture.

Ripley’s knee surgery already forced WWE to rethink the championship. Green was supposed to stabilize it.

Now the SmackDown women’s division needs to create momentum elsewhere immediately.

Charlotte Flair is an obvious possibility. Jade Cargill remains one of the division’s biggest stars. Tiffany Stratton is already connected to Green and currently holds the WWE Women’s United States Championship. Nia Jax and Lash Legend were positioned directly around the championship at the end of last night’s show, with Jax physically holding Green’s championship over her head.

That visual matters.

WWE essentially gave itself an immediate championship program without needing Green to wrestle.

Nia can argue that the champion is vulnerable. Lash can continue building credibility around her. Fatal Influence just defeated Green and Stratton. Charlotte and Jade remain major players capable of being moved into the championship picture whenever WWE needs them.

The pieces are there.

The problem is that WWE now has to build around an injured champion instead of building toward Green defending the championship.

WWE Should Not Take the Championship Away From Chelsea Green Yet

Unless WWE receives medical information indicating Green will be gone for an extended period, taking the championship away from her immediately would be the wrong move.

Green has spent years turning whatever WWE gives her into something entertaining.

She finally received the biggest opportunity of her career at SummerSlam and got one of the loudest reactions of the match when she won.

This championship reign deserves an opportunity to breathe.

More importantly, Green does not need to wrestle every week to make the championship feel important.

Put her on television.

Let her talk.

Let challengers circle her.

Let Nia Jax brag about what happened last night. Let Fatal Influence claim they already exposed the new champion. Let Tiffany Stratton defend her friend while balancing her own championship responsibilities. Let Charlotte Flair and Jade Cargill remain looming threats.

Suddenly, Green being unable to wrestle temporarily can become part of the story instead of automatically killing it.

There is even a potentially stronger long-term story waiting whenever Ripley returns.

Ripley never lost the WWE Women’s Championship in the ring.

Green became champion because Ripley could not compete.

If Chelsea survives this injury, establishes herself as champion and holds the title until Ripley eventually returns, WWE has a ready-made championship feud without needing to manufacture one.

Rhea can claim she never lost her championship.

Chelsea can claim the division moved on without her.

That is considerably more interesting than treating Green like a temporary placeholder.

Final Thoughts

The Chelsea Green injury is an awful break at exactly the moment her WWE career finally reached another level.

Green went from winning the biggest championship of her career at SummerSlam Night 2 to having the interim label removed on SmackDown, only to leave the same show with a broken orbital bone and a trip to the emergency room.

For Green personally, the priority is obviously determining the severity of the injury and how long she will actually be unable to compete.

For WWE, patience is essential.

Do not create another interim championship.

Do not immediately vacate the title.

Do not erase the momentum Green created at SummerSlam because of an injury before knowing how long she will actually be sidelined.

If Green can return relatively quickly, WWE should use her strengths as a character to keep the WWE Women’s Championship visible while building Nia Jax, Lash Legend, Fatal Influence, Charlotte Flair, Jade Cargill and the rest of SmackDown around her.

If she is facing a lengthy absence, WWE will eventually have to make a much harder decision.

Either way, the company has suddenly gone from having two WWE Women’s Champions to potentially having neither available to wrestle.

The Chelsea Green injury has turned what should have been the beginning of her championship story into one of WWE’s biggest creative problems coming out of SummerSlam.
