The increasingly violent rivalry between NXT Champion Tony D’Angelo and Naraku reaches what should be its final destination tonight when they collide in a Street Fight for the NXT Championship. Tony already defeated Naraku at Great American Bash, but that victory did nothing to end Naraku’s obsession with the championship or Tony’s desire to punish the man who attacked him with a fireball, targeted his injured eye and continued coming after him even after losing.
Their rematch was originally announced as another standard championship match, but any attempt at keeping Tony and Naraku inside the normal boundaries of professional wrestling disappeared last week. Tony attacked Naraku following his victory over Tate Wilder, Naraku accidentally sprayed poison mist into the face of a security guard, and the two men brawled again in the parking lot before NXT General Manager Robert Stone changed the match into a Street Fight.
Tonight’s episode will also feature Saquon Shugars finally fighting DarkState with Noam Dar and Romeo Moreno beside him, although neither man appears to be helping Shugars out of genuine loyalty. Jaida Parker gets another opportunity against Nattie after repeatedly standing against the veteran’s growing influence over the women’s division, while Shawn Spears faces Niko Vance in his first match against the man who removed him from The Culling.
Reina Volcan will make her televised NXT in-ring debut against Skylar Raye after weeks of destructive warnings, and Hank Walker attempts to avenge Tank Ledger when he meets the increasingly dangerous Keanu Carver.
With NXT Heatwave set for August 30 in Edinburg, Texas, tonight needs to do more than settle personal grudges. The show must begin establishing which champions, challengers, factions and emerging prospects will occupy the most important positions on the brand over the next several weeks.
Here is everything advertised for tonight’s show

Tony D’Angelo and Naraku’s Street Fight should be the final chapter of a rivalry that has already moved far beyond the NXT Championship.
Naraku initially approached Tony through cryptic warnings, unsettling gestures and carefully timed appearances that allowed him to remain close to the champion without immediately explaining what he wanted. His intentions eventually became obvious. Naraku did not respect Tony, admire him or want to protect him. He wanted to invade Tony’s mind, destabilize his championship reign and convince him that the threat was larger than anything that could be handled through a normal match.
Tony attempted to confront that threat directly, but Naraku repeatedly attacked him from unexpected positions. The rivalry escalated when Naraku launched a fireball into Tony’s face, leaving the champion’s right eye injured heading into Great American Bash.
That attack gave Naraku every possible advantage. Tony entered their championship match with his eye bandaged, his vision compromised and his attention divided between defending the title and protecting the injury. Naraku immediately targeted the damaged area, used the environment around ringside and drove Tony through the barricade.
Tony still survived.
He absorbed Naraku’s offense, fought through the damage and delivered Dead to Rights to retain the NXT Championship. The result should have ended Naraku’s challenge. He received the opportunity he wanted, weakened the champion before the bell and still failed to take the title.
Naraku responded by refusing to accept that the loss had settled anything.
Last week, Tate Wilder stepped forward to face him. Wilder used his speed, athleticism and willingness to take risks to create several openings, but Naraku repeatedly stopped his momentum. When Wilder attempted a moonsault, Naraku shoved him from the top rope and eventually put him away with Into the Abyss.
The match rebuilt Naraku after Great American Bash, but the real development occurred after the bell. Tony immediately entered and attacked him. Security attempted to separate them, only for Naraku’s poison mist to strike one of the officials instead of Tony.
Stone later told Tony that he would receive another championship match with Naraku tonight. Tony said that was good, but not good enough. He was unwilling to wait another week while Naraku continued walking around NXT as though their first match had not provided an answer.
Tony found him in the parking lot and restarted the fight. Stone finally recognized that another traditional wrestling match was pointless and converted the rematch into a Street Fight.
The stipulation makes sense because Tony has already proven that he can beat Naraku in a standard championship match. Another conventional contest would only repeat the same ideas with fewer reasons to care. A Street Fight gives both men permission to turn the months of fireballs, poison mist, ambushes and psychological attacks into an openly violent confrontation.
It also creates more danger for Tony than he may realize.
Tony believes the Street Fight gives him the freedom to punish Naraku without referees, security or disqualifications preventing him from finishing the job. Naraku may view the match as permission to use every weapon, trick and supernatural element that would normally disqualify him.
There is nothing preventing Naraku from using the mist. There is nothing preventing him from targeting Tony’s eye with a weapon. There is nothing preventing another fireball, an attack before the bell or interference from someone connected to his larger purpose.
Tony demanded an environment without restrictions because he is angry. Naraku has spent the entire rivalry demonstrating that he is most comfortable when there are no restrictions.
That is where the champion’s greatest strength could become his greatest weakness. Tony’s aggression has made him difficult to intimidate, but it has also caused him to react emotionally. He did not wait for Naraku after last week’s match. He attacked immediately. He did not accept Stone’s announcement and prepare for the following Tuesday. He went looking for another fight in the parking lot.
Naraku has not successfully frightened Tony away from him. He may have successfully made Tony reckless enough to enter the exact type of match Naraku wanted.
The Street Fight must still provide a decisive conclusion. Tony has already defeated Naraku once. If he wins again, Naraku should no longer have a legitimate argument for another championship match. The rivalry cannot continue through another inconclusive finish, accidental mist attack or backstage brawl.
Naraku winning would represent a dramatic change at the top of NXT, but WWE would need to commit fully to him as champion. He cannot spend months building himself as a mysterious threat, lose his first title match and then win the rematch through a weak shortcut. If Naraku captures the championship, the victory must make him feel more dangerous than he did before Great American Bash.
Tony retaining is the safer and more logical outcome. The more important question is how far he will be forced to go and what defeating Naraku will take out of him before Heatwave.
The six-man tag-team match is built around Saquon Shugars confronting the consequences of his past.
Shugars spent months as part of DarkState alongside Dion Lennox, Cutler James and Osiris Griffin. The group presented itself as a unified force, but internal tension repeatedly emerged whenever its plans failed. Shugars was unpredictable, emotional and unwilling to quietly follow the direction established by the other members.
Those problems reached their breaking point after DarkState failed to win the NXT Tag Team Championship. Lennox, James and Griffin blamed Shugars for the group’s loss and removed him. The same men who had once stood behind him immediately treated him as the weakness that had prevented DarkState from reaching its potential.
Shugars responded by attacking them and defeating Lennox at Great American Bash, but that victory did not solve his larger problem. DarkState still had three members. Shugars was still alone.
James and Griffin attacked him after the match, reinforcing the reality that defeating one member would never be enough while the group maintained its numerical advantage.
Shugars attempted to confront DarkState again during the Fatal Four-Way NXT Tag Team Championship No. 1 Contender’s Match, arriving through the crowd with a baseball bat. Lennox intercepted him before he could enter the ring and prevent the situation from becoming another direct attack.
Last week, Shugars finally admitted that he needed partners.
He approached OTM, but Bronco Nima and Lucien Price refused because they did not trust him. He approached Hank Walker, Tank Ledger and E.K. Prosper, but they also rejected him. WrenQCC offered encouragement without agreeing to fight beside him.
Every rejection was justified.
Shugars may now be opposing DarkState, but that does not erase what he did while he was part of the group. He participated in DarkState’s attacks, intimidation and attempts to control NXT. The people he approached had no reason to risk themselves for someone who had never earned their trust.
Romeo Moreno eventually agreed because he believed defeating DarkState could move him closer to championship contention. Moreno then convinced Noam Dar to join the team by appealing to his confidence and ego.
That gives Shugars partners, but not necessarily allies.
Moreno is helping because he sees an opportunity. Dar is helping because he believes his presence can decide the match. Neither man has a deep personal connection to Shugars or his fight against DarkState.
DarkState enters with the advantage of experience, chemistry and a shared purpose. Lennox, James and Griffin may have their own personalities, but they understand how to isolate opponents, control space and use their numbers. They removed the one member they believed was creating instability and now have an opportunity to prove that they are stronger without him.
Shugars, Dar and Moreno are three individuals trying to become a team for one night.
That difference should shape the entire match. DarkState should control the early portions through frequent tags and coordinated offense, forcing Shugars’ team to determine whether they are willing to trust one another when the match becomes difficult.
Shugars cannot approach tonight as though he only needs two men standing on the apron while he fights his former group alone. If revenge consumes him and he refuses to tag, DarkState will prove that his recklessness was the problem. If he willingly sacrifices his opportunity to attack Lennox in order to save Moreno or Dar, he may finally begin demonstrating that he has learned something since being removed.
The outcome could also affect the NXT Tag Team Championship picture. Moreno and Dar defeating an established faction would give them an argument for additional opportunities even if their partnership is temporary. DarkState winning would reinforce that removing Shugars restored the unit’s focus and could return Lennox, James and Griffin to the title chase.
The match needs to reveal more than which team can secure a pinfall. It needs to show whether Shugars is capable of changing or whether DarkState was correct about him from the beginning.
Nattie and Jaida Parker will run back their increasingly personal rivalry.
Their first match was built around Nattie accusing Jaida of becoming soft. Nattie saw talent, confidence and physical ability in Parker, but believed she lacked the discipline and edge required to become one of NXT’s leading women.
Nattie defeated her and treated the result as proof that her criticism had been correct.
Jaida did not respond by accepting Nattie as a mentor. She became increasingly determined to challenge the veteran’s influence over the division.
That influence has expanded through Nikkita Lyons, Karmen Petrovic and Layla Diggs. Nattie has presented herself as the experienced leader capable of guiding younger women, but her methods have repeatedly relied on interference, numerical advantages and the expectation that everyone around her should follow her instructions.
Diggs began questioning that approach before suffering an injury. When Diggs earned a Women’s North American Championship match against Zaria, she refused Nattie’s offer to bring Lyons and Petrovic to ringside because she wanted to prove that she could win on her own.
Jaida has challenged Nattie from the opposite direction.
She defeated Petrovic despite attempted interference and disrupted Nattie’s group during Zaria’s championship defense last week. Nattie and Petrovic attacked Zaria at ringside until Jaida arrived and fought them.
Later in the episode, Jaida exchanged words with Kali Armstrong before Lyons attacked her from behind. Nattie then made it clear that she intended to settle the situation tonight.
The rematch carries more meaning than the first match because Jaida is no longer simply defending herself against criticism. She is standing between Nattie and the control Nattie is attempting to establish over the division.
Jaida needs the victory more than Nattie.
Another loss would allow Nattie to claim that nothing has changed. Jaida can continue fighting Lyons and Petrovic, but if she cannot defeat the person directing them, the rivalry will remain trapped in the same position.
A victory would prove that Jaida learned from the first match without surrendering her identity or accepting Nattie’s version of mentorship.
The likely complication is the presence of Lyons and Petrovic. Jaida has already demonstrated that she can fight through their involvement, but NXT cannot repeatedly use the same interference without progressing the story. Either Jaida needs to overcome the numbers, someone needs to neutralize Nattie’s group, or the finish must create a stipulation that removes the supporting cast from the next confrontation.
Nattie’s group is also becoming increasingly unstable beneath the surface. Diggs wanted independence. Lyons and Petrovic have been willing to follow Nattie, but neither woman should be satisfied with permanently operating as another person’s backup. A loss tonight could reveal whether Nattie accepts responsibility or immediately blames the women surrounding her.
Shawn Spears and Niko Vance will meet after the collapse of The Culling.
Spears created the group because he believed younger wrestlers needed direction, discipline and someone capable of recognizing their potential. Vance became one of his primary projects. Spears wanted him to become more aggressive, decisive and willing to take opportunities without waiting for permission.
Vance eventually applied those lessons to Spears.
The relationship collapsed after Spears and Vance lost to Sean Legacy and Dorian Van Dux. Spears refused an attempted tag, leaving Vance exposed and contributing to the defeat. Vance responded by attacking him and driving him through a table while Izzi Dame sided with Vance.
Last week, Spears appeared in a video filmed near Full Sail University and challenged Vance to prove how much he had learned. Spears framed the match as a test, but revenge is clearly part of his motivation. Vance did not merely leave The Culling. He embarrassed the person who believed he had created it.
Tonight places the teacher against the student, but Spears cannot pretend he had no role in producing the person standing across from him.
Spears encouraged Vance’s ruthlessness. He taught him to identify weakness and act when an opportunity appeared. When Vance decided Spears had become the weakness inside The Culling, he followed the principles Spears had spent months promoting.
Vance needs to win more than Spears.
Defeating his former mentor would establish that removing Spears was evolution rather than an emotional overreaction. It would allow Vance and Dame to move forward as the surviving pieces of The Culling without constantly being defined by the man they removed.
Losing would raise questions about whether Vance was actually prepared to operate without Spears’ guidance.
Spears’ advantage is familiarity. He knows Vance’s habits because he helped shape them. He understands when Vance becomes impatient, where he leaves openings and which emotional reactions can be manipulated.
Vance’s advantage is physicality and the willingness to hurt Spears without hesitation. Spears may still think of him as a student. Vance has already demonstrated that he sees Spears as an obstacle.
Izzi Dame’s presence could become the deciding factor. She sided with Vance during the breakup and has continued moving independently after her involvement in Zaria’s Fatal Four-Way title defense. Interfering would strengthen Vance’s chances, but it would also undermine his attempt to prove that he has surpassed Spears.
Reina Volcan’s televised NXT in-ring debut is one of the most important individual showcases on tonight’s card.
Volcan first appeared by attacking Tatum Paxley before NXT formally revealed her new name and presentation. The attack immediately established that she was not arriving as a friendly prospect hoping to gradually earn attention.
Her recent video packages have emphasized destruction, volcanic imagery and the idea that beauty should never be mistaken for weakness. Volcan has promised that NXT will not survive her, creating expectations that go beyond an ordinary developmental debut.
Tonight against Skylar Raye is where the presentation must become an actual wrestler.
Viewers have seen the entrance, the warnings and the character. They now need to understand how Volcan operates once the bell rings. Her movement, offense, selling, intensity and finishing move must support the confidence of the introduction.
The match does not need to be long. It needs to be decisive.
A prolonged back-and-forth contest would work against the way Volcan has been presented unless Raye is being positioned as someone important in her own right. The purpose should be showing that Volcan possesses something different from the rest of the women’s division.
NXT already has power wrestlers, strikers, technical wrestlers and high-flying athletes. Volcan cannot rely entirely on dark imagery and a new name to stand apart. Her offense needs to feel violent, controlled and recognizable enough that the audience immediately understands what future opponents will be forced to survive.
The unresolved issue with Paxley also remains important. Volcan did not attack her randomly unless WWE intends to abandon the introduction as quickly as it happened. Paxley could appear after the match, confront her backstage or become the first established opponent to test whether Volcan’s threats have substance.
Paxley recently endured a punishing championship rivalry with Zaria and continued smiling through increasing levels of violence. That makes her an ideal first major opponent. Volcan is promising destruction, while Paxley has already demonstrated that pain does not affect her like it affects everyone else.
Tonight should establish Volcan. The following weeks must give that establishment direction.
Keanu Carver faces Hank Walker after his destructive issue with Hank and Tank continued escalating.
Carver put Hank through a table at Great American Bash, making the situation personal before either member of Hank and Tank had an opportunity to defeat him in a standard match.
Tank attempted to retaliate, but Carver defeated him last week. Hank now receives his chance to respond.
The appeal is straightforward. Carver has been presented as one of the most physically imposing and violent prospects in NXT. Hank has built his identity around toughness, heart and his loyalty to Tank.
This should not become an overly complicated technical match. The story calls for two heavyweights hitting one another until one can no longer continue.
Carver needs to continue feeling dangerous. His size, explosiveness and surprising athleticism separate him from wrestlers who are simply large. He does not move like someone who should be capable of producing that much force so quickly.
Hank cannot approach the match as though he is trying to prove he can outmuscle Carver. His best chance is surviving the initial assault, forcing Carver to work longer than expected and testing whether the larger man can remain controlled when immediate destruction does not produce a victory.
Tank’s presence is likely to matter. Carver already defeated him, and Hank is fighting partly because of what happened to his partner. Tank may attempt to prevent another attack or provide the distraction Hank needs.
That would give Hank a victory, but it would not necessarily stop Carver. Losing because Hank and Tank worked together could push Carver toward attacking both men and create a handicap match, a No Disqualification Match or another stipulation at Heatwave.
Several stories that are not officially advertised should also continue tonight.
Lola Vice earned another NXT Women’s Championship opportunity by defeating Kelani Jordan and Kali Armstrong in last week’s Triple Threat Match. Vice did not dominate the closing sequence. Armstrong absorbed Vice’s Spinning Backfist and Jordan’s 450 Splash before Vice kicked Jordan from the ring and stole the pin.
That finish gave Vice the victory while leaving Jordan with another painful failure in a No. 1 Contender’s Match.
Jordan is now 0-8 in those situations. Her talent is not in question. She repeatedly reaches championship contention, performs at a high level and fails to recognize the exact moment when the opportunity is available.
Last week represented that problem perfectly. Jordan avoided Vice’s backfist, watched Armstrong absorb it and then landed the 450 Splash. Instead of immediately securing the victory, she left enough room for Vice to remove her and take the pin.
Jordan can blame Vice for stealing the decision, but her own choices contributed to the result. That frustration should not disappear this week. It should begin changing her.
Vice now receives another match against NXT Women’s Champion Kendal Grey after Grey defeated her at Great American Bash. WWE has not announced when the rematch will occur, but tonight should begin rebuilding their rivalry.
Grey has already proven that defeating Vice was not a one-night accident by successfully defending the championship against Nattie. Vice now has to demonstrate what she learned from losing the title and whether she can create an answer for Grey’s counters, amateur-wrestling base and Shades of Grey.
Zaria also needs a clear challenger for the NXT Women’s North American Championship.
Layla Diggs’ injury forced last week’s advertised singles defense to become a Fatal Four-Way against Izzi Dame, Lizzy Rain and Nikkita Lyons. Zaria survived interference from Nattie and Petrovic before hitting Lyons with a Spear and an F-5 to retain.
The emergency match protected the championship attraction, but it did not establish a definite next opponent. Dame survived Zaria’s Spear and could argue that she was never pinned. Rain remains capable of creating a faster championship match. Diggs still owns the opportunity she originally earned whenever she is medically cleared.
Zaria’s reign needs a personal rivalry rather than another collection of challengers fighting around her. Tonight should begin narrowing those possibilities.
Tavion Heights must also respond to his loss against Jackson Drake.
Heights controlled large portions of the match through his wrestling ability and power, but The Vanity Project’s involvement gave Drake the opening to steal the victory. Myles Borne had watched with Heights earlier in the evening but was not present when Baylor and Smokes surrounded the match.
Heights has already suggested that he and Borne could challenge for the NXT Tag Team Championship. Borne did not show the same enthusiasm.
That difference could place the former No Quarter Catch Crew partners on separate paths. Heights appears interested in rebuilding their partnership. Borne remains focused on protecting the North American Championship, especially with Kam Hendrix continuing to circle the title.
The Vanity Project now has problems developing throughout the roster. Baylor and Smokes retained the Tag Team Championship against Sean Legacy and Dorian Van Dux through outside interference, while Drake has created issues with Heights and Borne.
The group is winning, but those victories are producing more enemies every week. Eventually, the numbers surrounding The Vanity Project will not be enough if every wrestler they cheated begins working together.
Tristan Angels and Shiloh Hill also remain unfinished.
Angels destroyed the replacement tooth he had stolen from Hill, believing the tooth represented Hill’s attempt to appear normal and presentable. Hill responded by promising that “the fog is coming,” presenting the loss of his polished appearance as the beginning of a more unstable version of himself.
The story has established its symbolism. It now needs another match.
Hill lost to Angels at Great American Bash. A rematch should determine whether this new version of Hill makes him more dangerous or simply more distracted.
Final Thoughts
Tony D’Angelo and Naraku’s Street Fight gives tonight a legitimate main event and what should be a decisive ending to the NXT Championship rivalry.
Tony already defeated Naraku under difficult circumstances at Great American Bash. Naraku attacked his eye, entered with every psychological advantage and still failed. Tonight cannot become another temporary answer followed by another brawl next week.
Either Tony destroys the threat and moves forward as champion, or Naraku finally proves that his presentation, warnings and supernatural attacks can produce the result he has promised.
The rest of the card is built around trust and betrayal.
Saquon Shugars needs Noam Dar and Romeo Moreno even though neither man has a personal reason to trust him. Shawn Spears must face the student who used his lessons against him. Jaida Parker is fighting not only Nattie but the influence Nattie has built throughout the women’s division. Hank Walker is stepping forward because Carver hurt Tank.
Reina Volcan represents the one major beginning on a show filled with potential endings. Her presentation has created expectations. Tonight determines whether her in-ring performance can immediately support them.
The card does not currently include Kendal Grey, Lola Vice, Zaria, Kelani Jordan, The Vanity Project or Myles Borne in advertised matches, but their stories remain essential to the road toward Heatwave. NXT cannot allow them to disappear simply because tonight’s lineup is already crowded.
By the end of tonight, Tony and Naraku’s issue should be settled, Shugars’ future away from DarkState should be clearer, The Culling’s surviving pieces should have a new direction and Volcan should feel like a genuine addition to the women’s division rather than another heavily promoted debut without an immediate plan.
Last week connected nearly every part of the roster. Tonight must start separating those stories into the rivalries WWE intends to carry toward Heatwave.
