WWE Backlash May 9th, 2026 Preview: Roman Reigns And Jacob Fatu Collide, IYO SKY Battles Asuka, And John Cena’s Major Announcement Looms

WWE Backlash arrives tonight from Tampa with a card that feels smaller on paper but heavier in consequence. This is not a bloated PLE built around throwing everybody onto the show just to say they made the lineup. It is a tighter five-match card with two championships on the line, a major John Cena announcement hanging over the night, and several stories that could reshape WWE’s direction coming out of WrestleMania season. Roman Reigns walks into tonight as World Heavyweight Champion, but Jacob Fatu is not being presented like a challenger just happy to be there. Seth Rollins and Bron Breakker finally collide after months of betrayal, injury, revenge, and unfinished business. IYO SKY and Asuka bring a rivalry with real history into a featured spot. Trick Williams and Sami Zayn continue one of the strangest, most uneven, but still important title programs in WWE right now. Then there is Danhausen, The Miz, Kit Wilson, and a mystery partner situation that could either become one of the night’s biggest surprises or one of its weirdest creative swings. Backlash may not be the deepest card WWE has put together, but if the right decisions are made, tonight could be a strong reset point for several major acts.

Here is everything advertised for tonight’s show

  • Roman Reigns (c) vs. Jacob Fatu — World Heavyweight Championship
  • Trick Williams (c) vs. Sami Zayn — United States Championship
  • Seth Rollins vs. Bron Breakker
  • IYO SKY vs. Asuka
  • Danhausen & a mystery partner vs. The Miz & Kit Wilson
  • John Cena to make a major announcement

Roman Reigns vs. Jacob Fatu is the match that gives tonight’s show its main-event weight. Reigns winning the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania put him back on top of WWE in a way that felt familiar, but Jacob Fatu challenging him immediately after changed the tone. This is not just another Bloodline-style family issue. Fatu has been positioned as the one member of the family who does not fear Roman, does not need Roman’s approval, and does not look at him like an untouchable final boss. That matters. The entire story works because Fatu feels dangerous enough to make the title match believable, even if Reigns still feels like the safer pick to retain. WWE has done a good job making Jacob feel like a true main-event threat, but the criticism is also fair: this build has moved fast, and a match this big could have used more time to breathe. Still, sometimes the right opponent at the right moment is enough, and Fatu has the presence to make this feel bigger than the short road to get here.

Seth Rollins vs. Bron Breakker is probably the most straightforward grudge match on the card, and that is not a bad thing. Breakker turning on Rollins, destroying The Vision from the inside, returning at WrestleMania, and spearing Rollins into another level of damage gave this match the kind of physical edge WWE needed after WrestleMania. Rollins is still one of the best big-match storytellers in the company, but Breakker is the one who needs to come out of this feeling like the future. That is the tricky part. If Rollins wins, WWE gets the revenge payoff. If Breakker wins, WWE sends a clear message that Bron is not just a powerhouse prospect anymore — he is the guy being prepared to run through the top of the card. The better long-term move is Breakker winning, because he needs the statement victory more than Rollins needs another reminder that he is Seth Rollins.

IYO SKY vs. Asuka might be the best pure wrestling match on the show if WWE gives it time. This rivalry works because it is not just “two great wrestlers having a match.” There is history, respect, tension, pride, jealousy, mentorship, and legacy baked into it. IYO and Asuka do not need overproduced drama to make the match feel important. Their careers already do that work. The only criticism is that this probably should have been treated like a bigger centerpiece on the road to Backlash. WWE had a ready-made story with years of history and two of the best women’s wrestlers of their generation, but at times the build felt like it was fighting for space instead of being pushed as one of the main attractions. Even with that, the match itself can overdeliver and remind everyone why both women should always be featured at a high level.

Trick Williams defending the United States Championship against Sami Zayn is the most complicated match to judge. Trick winning the title at WrestleMania was a huge moment, and he has the charisma, crowd connection, and star presence to make the United States Championship feel fresh. The problem is the road to this rematch has been wrapped around the Gingerbread Man story, and that has made the feud feel more ridiculous than important at times. There is a way to do comedy in wrestling without lowering the stakes, but this program has flirted with turning a championship feud into something that feels too goofy for the belt involved. The saving grace is Sami. If the story is really about Sami becoming more bitter, more unhinged, and more desperate after losing the title, then there is something here. But if the match becomes more about the gag than the championship, that is where the booking deserves criticism. Trick should feel like a rising champion tonight, not like a side character in his own title defense.

Danhausen needing a mystery partner against The Miz and Kit Wilson is the wild card. This could be harmless fun, or it could become one of those segments fans debate all night depending on who the partner is. The Miz has always been at his best when he is leaning into annoying, opportunistic, self-absorbed character work, and Kit Wilson gives the act extra personality. Danhausen brings something completely different to WWE’s presentation, which can be good when handled with control. The concern is whether this belongs on a five-match PLE card when other divisions and wrestlers could use that spotlight. If the mystery partner lands, fans will forgive a lot. If it does not, this could feel like filler dressed up as a surprise.

Then there is John Cena’s announcement. WWE clearly wants it to feel important, and Cena’s presence alone brings attention to the show. The issue is that “major announcement” segments can either change the direction of a company or end up being a lot of hype for something that could have been handled in a video package. With Cena, the expectation is always high because of what he means to WWE. Whatever he says tonight needs to feel worthy of a PLE slot, especially on a card that only has five matches. If it ties into his future, a major event, a final run, or something that affects WWE’s summer direction, it will feel justified. If not, fans will call it out.

The road to Backlash has been uneven, but not empty. Roman and Jacob feels important. Rollins and Breakker feels personal. IYO and Asuka feels like the match fans know can steal the show. Trick and Sami has a strong title story buried under questionable creative choices. Danhausen’s match is all about the surprise. Cena’s announcement is all about the payoff. That makes tonight feel like a show with real upside, but also one where WWE has to stick the landing. The company does not need every finish to be shocking. It just needs every finish to make sense.

Online reaction heading into tonight has been mixed in the right way. Fans are excited for Roman vs. Fatu, Rollins vs. Breakker, and IYO vs. Asuka, while the louder criticism has centered on whether the United States Championship story has been too silly and whether a mystery-partner comedy tag should be taking up valuable PLE real estate. That is fair. WWE has earned trust with its major-event presentation, but good presentation does not automatically fix uneven creative. Tonight’s card has the talent to work. The question is whether the booking gives the talent enough support.

Final Thoughts

WWE Backlash does not need to be a WrestleMania-level spectacle to be successful. It needs to be focused, meaningful, and clean in its direction. Roman Reigns vs. Jacob Fatu should define the top of the card. Seth Rollins vs. Bron Breakker should establish where Bron truly stands. IYO SKY vs. Asuka should remind everyone why both women are special. Trick Williams vs. Sami Zayn needs to protect the United States Championship from being swallowed by the silliness around it. Danhausen’s mystery partner needs to actually matter. And John Cena’s announcement needs to feel like more than a tease.

If WWE gets those pieces right, tonight can be more than just the first major stop after WrestleMania. It can be the show that sets the tone for the summer.
