Tonight’s WWE Friday Night SmackDown comes at a very important point for the blue brand. WrestleMania 42 is in the rearview, Backlash is less than two weeks away on Saturday, May 9th, and WWE now has to prove that last week’s reset was not just a post-Mania burst of chaos. The biggest stories heading into tonight are clear: Ricky Saints makes his SmackDown debut, Fatal Influence gets its first real main-roster test when Jacy Jayne faces Charlotte Flair, Cody Rhodes is still looking for his next step as Undisputed WWE Champion, Tiffany Stratton begins life as Women’s United States Champion, and Rhea Ripley has a receipt waiting after being jumped last week. SmackDown has a lot of moving pieces right now, and tonight needs to tighten them up instead of just stacking more angles on top of each other.
Here is everything advertised for tonight’s show
- Ricky Saints makes his WWE SmackDown debut
- Jacy Jayne vs. Charlotte Flair
The biggest thing tonight is Ricky Saints. SmackDown needs fresh energy, and Saints is coming in at the perfect time. The roster is in that awkward post-WrestleMania space where some stories are ending, some are being restarted, and some are clearly being built fast for Backlash. That is dangerous booking territory because a debut can either feel like a real arrival or just another name added to a crowded show. Saints needs the first one. He does not need to be thrown into a world title program on night one, but he does need a clear presentation. Let him talk, let him wrestle, or let him walk into a confrontation that immediately tells the audience who he is and why he matters. If WWE treats this like a soft introduction, it will be a missed opportunity. If they give him a strong first impression, SmackDown instantly gains another major personality.
Jacy Jayne vs. Charlotte Flair is the most important match advertised because it is really about Fatal Influence’s credibility. Last week, Jacy Jayne, Fallon Henley, and Lainey Reid made noise by attacking top names across the women’s division. That was the right kind of debut: loud, aggressive, and disruptive. But the follow-up matters more than the attack. Anybody can jump people from behind. The question tonight is whether Fatal Influence can stand across from Charlotte Flair and still feel like a real threat. Jacy does not necessarily need a clean win, but she cannot look overwhelmed. If the match turns into another lazy disqualification without anything meaningful behind it, WWE risks cooling down the group one week after heating them up. The better play is to make Fatal Influence look organized, dangerous, and strategic, while still letting Charlotte feel like the mountain they are trying to climb.
Rhea Ripley also has to matter tonight. She was attacked last week, and if WWE wants the women’s division to feel like one of SmackDown’s strongest pieces, Rhea cannot just brush that off with a quick promo. She should be angry. She should be hunting. She should make Fatal Influence feel like they poked the wrong champion. The balance is important, though. WWE should not have Rhea destroy all three of them immediately, because that would kill the threat. But she also cannot look helpless against a newly arrived group. The smartest booking would be to let Rhea get some revenge while still leaving Fatal Influence standing tall enough to continue the story.
Tiffany Stratton’s first night as Women’s United States Champion is another major piece of the show. Winning the title from Giulia last week was a strong call because Tiffany has the personality to make that championship feel bigger. Now WWE has to give the title an actual lane. Tiffany celebrating is fine, but it should not just be a victory lap. She needs a challenger, a direction, and a reason for the belt to feel important immediately. A mid-card women’s title only works if it creates stories instead of just existing as an accessory. Tiffany is the right woman to carry it, but the booking has to match her confidence.
Cody Rhodes being advertised is important, but WWE needs to do more with him than simply remind everyone that he is still champion. Last week’s promo was solid, but it felt like Cody was waiting for his next story to find him. That cannot be the case tonight. He is the Undisputed WWE Champion. He should not feel like a supporting character on his own brand while the Bloodline story controls the emotional weight of the company again. Randy Orton being advertised keeps the WrestleMania fallout alive, but if that issue is done, WWE needs to move Cody forward. Drew McIntyre being advertised is interesting because he could easily step into Cody’s world and give SmackDown a serious top-level program. Cody needs danger. He needs pressure. He needs a challenger who does not feel like filler before the next major PLE.
The road to Backlash is where tonight’s show has to be sharper. Roman Reigns vs. Jacob Fatu is already one of the biggest matches on the Backlash card, and that story is carrying major weight after Fatu destroyed Solo Sikoa and The MFTs last week. That was a great closing angle because it made Fatu feel like a monster again. But WWE has to be careful. The Bloodline is still hot, but it is also WWE’s favorite safety net. Every time creative needs instant stakes, they go back to Roman, Solo, The Usos, and the family drama. It works because the characters are strong, but SmackDown cannot become a show where everything else feels secondary. Tonight has to show that Cody, Rhea, Tiffany, Jade, Fatal Influence, Drew, Orton, and Ricky Saints all have their own gravity too.
Jade Cargill being advertised also matters. She lost the WWE Women’s Championship to Rhea Ripley at WrestleMania, and she needs a strong reset just as much as anyone. Jade cannot drift after losing the title. She should either be chasing her way back into the championship picture or being positioned for a major non-title feud that keeps her looking like a star. SmackDown’s women’s division is suddenly crowded in a good way, but that also means WWE has to be disciplined. Rhea is champion. Tiffany has the Women’s United States Title. Fatal Influence just arrived. Charlotte and Alexa are still major players. Paige and Brie are involved. Jade needs a lane before she gets lost in the shuffle.
The praise for WWE right now is that SmackDown feels alive again. There are new names, new title situations, and several stories that could turn into something strong. Fatal Influence freshened up the women’s division. Ricky Saints gives the show a new debut to build around. Jacob Fatu feels dangerous again. Tiffany Stratton as champion gives WWE a natural character to build the Women’s United States Title around.
The criticism is that a lot of this still feels rushed. Backlash is coming fast, and WWE has to make the card feel earned instead of thrown together. Last week had good moments, but some of the booking felt like WWE was trying to create direction after the fact. Cody’s next step is still not clear. The tag division still needs a stronger story. Trick Williams and Sami Zayn need a proper follow-up. Fatal Influence needs substance, not just attacks. And the Bloodline story cannot be the only thing that feels important every week.
Tonight’s SmackDown should not be about adding more noise. It should be about focus. Give Ricky Saints a real debut. Give Jacy Jayne and Charlotte Flair a match that makes Fatal Influence feel legitimate. Give Rhea Ripley a strong response. Give Tiffany Stratton a first challenger. Give Cody Rhodes a real direction. And give the Backlash build enough urgency that the show does not feel like it is waiting for Raw or the PLE to do the heavy lifting.
Current WWE Backlash Match Card
- Roman Reigns (c) vs. Jacob Fatu — World Heavyweight Championship
- Seth Rollins vs. Bron Breakker
- IYO SKY vs. Asuka
Final Thoughts
Tonight’s WWE Friday Night SmackDown has the pieces to be a strong episode, but WWE has to book with purpose. Ricky Saints’ debut should feel important. Fatal Influence needs to prove last week was not just shock value. Cody Rhodes needs a sharper path. Tiffany Stratton needs to make the Women’s United States Championship feel like a real prize. Rhea Ripley needs revenge without killing the new faction’s momentum. And with Backlash less than two weeks away, SmackDown has to move stories forward, not just tease them.
The blue brand is in a good spot on paper. Now it needs execution. Tonight should tell us whether WWE is truly building a strong road to Backlash or just relying on Roman Reigns, Jacob Fatu, and the Bloodline to carry the weight again.

I’m the quiet one until the bell rings then I’ve got takes. I live for WWE NXT and TNA, I want every promotion to succeed, and I will absolutely roast the bad decisions on sight (because someone has to). Anime taught me to respect long-term storytelling; wrestling taught me that sometimes the plan is “we panicked” and called it “unpredictable.” The Miz got me into all of this, so yeah I appreciate confidence, commitment, and the art of talking like you’re already the main event. Now I bring that same energy to the page as the main writer for Late Night Crew Wrestling because if you’re not here to be must-see and tell the truth, why are you here?!
